On the morning of July 17, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism held a nationwide online conference to review the first 6 months of the year.
At the Ho Chi Minh City bridge, Vice Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy chaired with leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The conference evaluated the results achieved and proposed solutions to promote the tasks for the last 6 months of 2025. In the first 6 months of the year, Ho Chi Minh City stood out with many events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South, national reunification, strongly developing the sports movement, extensive digital transformation and effective socialization.
The city also affirms its pioneering role, moving towards a dynamic cultural space, professional sports and sustainable tourism.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Nam Nhan shared his views on developing physical education and sports in Ho Chi Minh City in the new situation: from the post-merger organizational structure to the modern grassroots sports network management model.
Because the new Ho Chi Minh City after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau is not simply a change of administrative boundaries, but also a mission for a strategic vision: forming a special sports center of a megacity, contributing to the development of Vietnamese physical education and sports in the new era.
Therefore, the sports industry of Ho Chi Minh City needs to build a completely new, flexible, multi-dimensional approach to take advantage of regional synergy, thereby elevating sports to an important part of creative urban life.
Mr. Nguyen Nam Nhan believes that there are 5 key points needed for implementation. Of which, there are 2 key points worth noting.
First, the new Ho Chi Minh City will form a "sports triangle" with three missions: top-level training; providing human resources; organizing sports events. Based on the foundation of natural conditions, population, economy combined with comprehensive, modern and synchronous digitalization of Ho Chi Minh City.
Second, Ho Chi Minh City sports aims to move beyond the mindset of "sports are just for winning medals" and affirms that sports is a special economic sector.
Ho Chi Minh City is a young urban center with strong consumption, which is a golden market for sports training and experience services; production and trade of sports equipment, costumes, and applications; sports tourism - resorts - large-scale events; sports technology, AI applications, data, healthcare, etc.
In recent years, Ho Chi Minh City has been one of the two localities that has contributed the most to the achievements of Vietnamese sports in the international arena, along with Hanoi. In terms of grassroots sports, Ho Chi Minh City is considered the city with the strongest mass sports movement in the country. Currently, the city is the place to organize the most marathons and half marathons in Vietnam, with tournaments attracting nearly 20,000 domestic and international athletes.

Sports is the "civilization index" of modern cities.
Mr. Nguyen Nam Nhan affirmed: "We determine that raising the level of sports in Ho Chi Minh City is not only a specialized task but also a mission to develop people, communities and modern society with a megacity as expected by the Party and the State.
Ho Chi Minh City and the whole country are facing a historic opportunity to "rebuild" the city's sports in a comprehensive, innovative, and aspirational way.
In the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City will reorganize the sports training system, re-select, re-organize the training system in a streamlined, effective and efficient manner. It is expected to screen and reduce 20-25% of the total number of coaches and athletes, from 4,368 to about 3,560. Focus on investing in key sports with high potential for achievement and social impact.
