Cheap laptop market 'storms' with Snapdragon X chip

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên08/01/2025

The Snapdragon X is positioned as a budget-friendly option for laptops priced around $600, aiming to challenge the dominance of Intel and AMD in the low-cost laptop market.

The Snapdragon X is the entry-level chip in Qualcomm's processor lineup, alongside the Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite models meant for higher-end laptops. The chip has an 8-core design with a maximum clock speed of 3 GHz and a 30 MB cache. Although not as powerful as the high-end chips, the Snapdragon X still meets the needs of users well. Manufactured on a 4nm process, this Qualcomm chip promises superior performance in terms of energy efficiency compared to the Intel Core i5 120U.

Advantages and challenges for Snapdragon X

The Snapdragon X is based on ARM architecture, which offers advantages in power efficiency and long battery life, which are important for low-cost laptops. However, Qualcomm also faces the challenge of application compatibility, as many Windows applications are still developed for x86 processors. To address this, Qualcomm has partnered with Microsoft to expand the number of native ARM applications and uses the Prism emulation layer to allow x86 software to run on ARM devices.

The Snapdragon X is aimed at the sub-$600 laptop segment, making it ideal for budget-conscious consumers, educational institutions, and those who need a second device. While it can’t handle heavy-duty tasks like video editing or gaming, the chip is more than capable of handling office tasks, web browsing, and multimedia. Manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are expected to launch multiple devices using the Snapdragon X, with more than 60 designs already in production and expected to grow to 100 by 2026.

Despite the promise of the Snapdragon X, Qualcomm still faces a major challenge in convincing users to switch from Intel or AMD devices to ARM-based laptops. The success of the product will depend on the user experience, including battery life, app compatibility, and overall performance. However, with the development of AI features and support from Microsoft, Qualcomm may be on the cusp of making a significant inroad for ARM-based Windows laptops.
