During July and August 2025, the National Blood Center and the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion are expected to need a total of 90,000 units of blood to supply 180 hospitals in the northern region.
The Institute has continuously mobilized and invited blood donors in recent times; at the same time, it has worked with units to supplement blood donation schedules, helping people have more opportunities to donate blood.
Many agencies and units have paid attention and actively organized blood donation, responding to the campaign "Red Summer Blood Drops" launched by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation; especially with the participation of the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels, the Vietnam Medical Trade Union, the Government Youth Union, etc.
However, to ensure timely and effective blood needs for emergency and treatment, the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion still needs an additional 30,000 units of blood, of which about 15,000 units of blood type O alone are needed.
Emphasizing the need for blood and the role of blood donors during the summer, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, shared that summer is a season with fluctuations in the source of blood donors for many reasons: People spend time traveling with their families, students return to their hometowns.
In addition, the number of blood donors tends to decrease in the summer, but medical treatment cannot be stopped, and many cases even need more blood, such as children with congenital hemolytic anemia who need blood transfusions to stabilize their health and prepare for the new school year.
As the message of the World Health Organization on the occasion of the International Blood Donor Day on June 14 this year "Donate blood, give hope - Join hands to save people", each unit of blood donated is a life that is given hope to live, a life is extended. The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion hopes and calls on the community to join hands, be ready to go to blood donation points to donate, give faith, life to help patients overcome difficulties.
Previously, on June 20, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Head of the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation, signed an official dispatch on ensuring the maintenance of voluntary blood donation activities.
The Deputy Minister of Health requested the Steering Committees for Voluntary Blood Donation in provinces and cities to coordinate with the Department of Health to report and advise the People's Committees to strengthen the Steering Committees for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels; continue to maintain the organization of voluntary blood donation according to the 2025 blood mobilization and collection targets; at the same time, proactively coordinate with blood collection facilities to mobilize agencies, units, businesses, and schools in the area to organize blood donation sessions, and maintain voluntary blood donation schedules according to plan.
"We hope that those who are in good health can spare some of their precious time to donate blood at the Institute, fixed blood donation points or the nearest blood donation point organized by agencies or units," Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion shared.
