96-year-old man bedridden for 2 weeks after fall

Mr. NTĐ (96 years old) came to Hong Ngoc General Hospital (BVĐK) in a bedridden state for 2 weeks, all movements and activities were thanks to the help of his children and grandchildren. According to the patient's family: " After the fall, he tried many home treatment methods but the pain not only did not decrease but also became more severe, causing him to be bedridden.

Every time he tried to sit up or change position, the pain became more severe. The family was very concerned about whether or not to have surgery, because they were worried that his old age and poor health could lead to unexpected risks. In the end, we decided to take him to Hong Ngoc Hospital for examination and to find the best treatment.

X-ray and MRI results showed: T11, T12 vertebral bodies were broken, acutely collapsed, with bone marrow edema, and soft tissue edema behind the spine at the level from L2 to L5, with underlying pathology.

As the person who directly examined the patient, Dr. Trinh Tu Tam - Head of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging - Interventional Radiology, Hong Ngoc General Hospital, said: " Vertical collapse is a common injury, especially in patients with osteoporosis. The older you get, the lower your bone density becomes, making your bones more brittle. Even a slight impact can cause fracture, collapse, or vertebral collapse. In these cases, injecting biological cement to shape the vertebrae and improve mobility is the safest and most optimal method."

Restore vertebrae, return to movement after 30 minutes of cement injection

Based on the medical history and X-ray results, Dr. Trinh Tu Tam advised on the method and indicated the cement injection technique for the old man and received consent from the family.

Assessing this case, Dr. Tam shared: “ This is a difficult case, because the two broken vertebrae are located near large blood vessels and the heart and lungs. Cement injection requires absolute precision, so the doctor performs cement injection with the support of a DSA machine to put cement in the exact position of the broken vertebrae, avoiding cement overflow into the spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord, causing paralysis of the lower limbs.

In addition, the elderly man had difficulty listening and cooperating with the doctor, so the team had to assign a separate staff member to always be by his side, accompanying and supporting him throughout the intervention process as well as after recovery.

Before the surgery, the old man could not move and had to rely on the support of nurses.

Currently, biological cement injection is the leading minimally invasive method in the treatment of vertebral collapse. At Hong Ngoc General Hospital, biological cement injection is performed by highly qualified and experienced doctors in a one-way sterile operating room that meets US FDA standards.

Biological cement is injected directly from the outside through the needle tip into the collapsed vertebrae. The patient does not need anesthesia, only local anesthesia, a small amount of anesthetic about 5ml limits the effects caused by the drug. Combined with the use of DSA image guidance equipment to help determine the correct location, limit invasion, ensure safety, especially for elderly patients.

After only 30 minutes of biological cement injection, the old man was completely awake and could sit up immediately. After 1 day, he could walk gently with the help of his family and is recovering very well.

After the procedure, the patient was alert, could sit up immediately, eat and sleep well, and was helped by his children and grandchildren to walk gently. The doctor said that the patient's two broken vertebrae had been restored. They were very surprised and did not think that the cement injection method would be so effective. The family does not know what to say other than thank Dr. Tam and the medical team at Hong Ngoc " - the patient's family happily shared.

Through the case, Dr. Trinh Tu Tam advised that osteoporosis in the elderly is the main cause of vertebral collapse, collapse, and fracture with typical symptoms such as: loss of mobility, pain, difficulty sitting up or changing posture, etc.

If you encounter these conditions, you need to quickly go to medical facilities for timely examination and treatment to avoid complications such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, pressure ulcers, etc., which affect daily life and cause the patient to face bedridden conditions.
