Half a century has passed since the country was reunited, but the memories of those who worked on the battlefield are still vivid in the flow of history. Amidst the rain of bombs and bullets from the enemy, reporters, editors, and technicians of the Liberation News Agency (the frontline agency of the Vietnam News Agency, now the Vietnam News Agency) were both soldiers on the information front and also held guns to fight the enemy, fostering the belief in victory for the nation, contributing to the great Spring of 1975, liberating the South and unifying the country.

Keep the information flowing

During the resistance war against American imperialism, generations of reporters of the Vietnam News Agency did not fear danger, sticking close to the battlefield to record the most authentic moments of the resistance war for national independence and freedom.

In early 1972, the 20th Conference of the Party Central Committee (Term III) set out the task for the entire Party, the entire army and the entire people with the spirit of "persevering in the resistance until complete victory, must mobilize all forces, make extraordinary efforts, courageously move forward, and promote the resistance."

In that spirit, Vietnam News Agency has organized the selection and training of many classes of reporters to support the South in the fierce period to ensure that the news flow is not interrupted.

From 1959 to 1975, Vietnam News Agency sent nearly 450 people to the battlefield; of which 236 people supported the Liberation News Agency and the Southern battlefield.

Journalist Nguyen Sy Thuy (75 years old, former reporter of GP10 course of Liberation News Agency) said that in 1972, he was one of 149 students selected by Vietnam News Agency to be trained in writing and photography skills of GP10 reporter class.

After days of intensive training, reporters, telegraphers, and technicians of Vietnam News Agency marched with the spirit of "cutting through Truong Son to save the country."

GP10 reporters spread out to the battlefield from Binh Tri Thien to the Central provinces, the Central Highlands, the Southeast, the Southwest... all put aside their personal concerns and volunteered to go on the road for the greater cause.

Journalist Nguyen Sy Thuy shared that after 3 days of getting married, he and his comrades went to the battlefield. During the days of carrying out their duties in the Southern battlefield, the officers and reporters of the Liberation News Agency had to farm, fight, and work in extremely poor conditions.

There were times when they suffered from malaria and had to eat green beans for a whole week due to lack of food. Despite the hardships and difficulties, the journalists and soldiers of the Liberation News Agency did not hesitate to sacrifice, persistently staying on all the fierce battlefields, promptly reporting “hot” information, keeping the “source” of information of the Liberation News Agency flowing, despite the continuous rain of bombs and bullets from the enemy.

According to Journalist Bui Thanh Liem (77 years old, former war correspondent of the Liberation News Agency), during the arduous and fierce battle, nearly 300 martyrs of the Liberation News Agency fell, leaving behind a part of their blood and bones on the battlefield in the South.

Liberation News Agency is the press agency with the largest number of journalists sacrificed in the history of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press. Journalists and martyrs of Liberation News Agency are closely associated with the glorious history of Vietnam News Agency and the country.

In wartime as well as peacetime, regardless of their positions, generations of cadres, reporters, editors, and technicians of the Liberation News Agency have been diligent, energetic, and enthusiastic in their work, striving to complete their assigned tasks well.

Charge at the front line

Recalling the years of living, fighting and carrying out missions during the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign, Journalist Bui Thanh Liem said that in April 1975, the technical staff and telegraph operators were always diligently maintaining the radio waves before, during and after the liberation.

The Liberation News Agency "launched" many teams and groups of reporters at all the fronts of our army and people in the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign. Journalist Bui Thanh Liem was assigned as the Head of the Information Team of the 232nd Army Wing of the West-Southwest Front advancing towards Saigon. The Liberation News Agency teams quickly published news, articles, and recorded daily and hourly notes during the most important historical moments, and transferred them to the R War Zone for further delivery to the General Office in Hanoi .

From May 1975, the Liberation News Agency took over the headquarters of the Vietnam News Agency and many other facilities of the Republic of Vietnam government, transferred machinery and human resources from the Tay Ninh war zone to Saigon, and began broadcasting news and photos from Saigon to the Vietnam News Agency (now the Vietnam News Agency) to broadcast domestically and internationally .

Journalist Tran Trang Duong, Chairman of the Vietnam News Agency Veterans Association and Deputy Director of the Vietnam News Agency Information Center in the Southern region, affirmed that in the history of Vietnam's revolutionary press, the Liberation News Agency will always be a special symbol of the courage and collective intelligence of journalists who "hold both pen and gun."

During the arduous years of resistance against American imperialism to save the country, the Liberation News Agency affirmed its position as a "Heroic News Agency," excellently fulfilling its revolutionary information mission.

From the first news bulletins broadcast in the base area to becoming the official mouthpiece of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, the Liberation News Agency was not only a bridge of information between the frontline and the rear but also directly contributed to the victory of the historic Ho Chi Minh Campaign.

The cadres, reporters, editors and technicians of the Liberation News Agency stayed close to the battlefield, overcame countless difficulties, even faced bombs and sacrifices, promptly reported news and transmitted the voice of the Southern revolution to the people of the whole country and international friends.

On the historic day of April 30, 1975, they, along with reporters from Vietnam News Agency, witnessed and reported on the collapse of the Saigon government, the first hours of liberating the South and unifying the country.

Today, the generation of journalists at the Vietnam News Agency Information Center in the Southern region is honored and proud to continue the heroic and indomitable revolutionary tradition of previous generations, determined to join the Vietnam News Agency collective to maintain its role as the country's main news agency, unite and complete all assigned tasks in the new period, contributing to the strong development of Vietnam News Agency, and entering a new era with the whole country.

In recognition of the great contributions of the Liberation News Agency, in 1968, the Central Bureau of Southern Vietnam awarded the Liberation News Agency 16 golden words "Diligence, courage, self-reliance, overcoming difficulties, completing tasks" and many other noble awards.

In September 2020, the Liberation News Agency was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State for its outstanding achievements in the resistance war against the US to save the country./.
