According to Engadget , Threads is a "sibling" app to Instagram, so more than 1 billion users of that photo-sharing platform can easily sign up (not including users in the European Union, where the app is not yet available).
This impressive number was achieved even though Threads was still in its early stages and lacked basic features that many considered essential, such as search limited to usernames, no support for hashtags, and the inability to post Threads from the web.
The number of Threads users is growing rapidly.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing for those familiar with Twitter is that Threads doesn't yet have a chronological feed for posts. The algorithmic feed is full of brands, influencers, and celebrities, making it difficult for users to keep up with what friends and family are posting. A chronological feed is being rolled out, but Twitter may still be the app of choice for many to get minute-by-minute news updates.
" Politics and breaking news will certainly appear on Threads, but we will not do anything to encourage them," Instagram head Adam Mosseri wrote, noting that Threads' purpose is not to replace Twitter.
Christopher Kardatzke, co-founder of the Quiver Quantitative tool, said their data is derived from Instagram user profiles. He stated, "By viewing the profiles of those who have joined the platform, I can see where they stand in line and get an overall picture of how many users have signed up."
