Top student in the A00 exam in Thanh Hoa province: Used AI to look up theoretical questions.

With a total score of 29.75 (Mathematics 10; Physics 10 and Chemistry 9.75), Trinh Van Hieu, a student in class 12A1 of Le Loi High School, Tho Xuan commune, became the co-valedictorian of the A00 group in Thanh Hoa province, and also the runner-up of the A00 group nationwide in the 2025 high school graduation exam.

Hieu said he wasn't too surprised by the result, but was very happy and delighted that his efforts over the past time had been rewarded.

“When it was time to check the results, my mother was trembling with anxiety and didn't dare look, so she went to the neighbor's house to chat. When I found out I was the top student in the province and the second-highest scorer nationwide, I ran to tell my mother. She hugged me tightly, congratulated me, and then called my father to tell him the news,” Hieu recounted.

Hieu was born into a family where his father was a border guard and his mother was a librarian at a primary school. From a young age, the student was instilled with independence and perseverance.

From the moment he entered middle school, Hieu showed a love and talent for mathematics. He won first prize in the district-level mathematics competition in 8th grade and third prize in the Thanh Hoa provincial-level mathematics competition for gifted students in 9th grade.

In high school, Hieu continued to participate in the Le Loi High School's mathematics gifted student team and won second prize at the provincial level in the 2024-2025 school year.

Hieu said that outside of school, he has a passion for badminton and cycling. In the afternoons, the male student often cycles alone along the fields and familiar village roads to relax.

Sharing his study secrets, Hieu said there's no special method; he just tries to grasp the knowledge taught in class, pays close attention to the teachers' lectures, and studies on his own at home. In addition, he frequently uses AI (artificial intelligence) to look up theories and find materials online to reinforce his knowledge.

Hieu said that throughout the school year, he focused on thoroughly studying each topic, only starting to practice about 10 math problems in the last week before the exam. For physics and chemistry, he mainly reviewed the theory and practiced illustrative exercises.

With his recent exam results, Hieu plans to apply to Hanoi University of Science and Technology and the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, hoping to become a technology engineer in the future.

Mr. Trinh Xuan Hung (47 years old, Hieu's father) said that upon receiving the news that his son had topped the entrance exam and was granted leave by his unit, he traveled over 150km home to celebrate with his son.

"I am very proud of my son. I hope he maintains his studious spirit, humility, independence, and continues to strive for success," Mr. Hung said emotionally.

Mr. Le Van Sau, Vice Principal of Le Loi High School, said the school is very proud of Trinh Van Hieu's exam results. This is not the first time the school has had a valedictorian, however, the achievement of this male student is an inspiration, "igniting" the passion of generations of students at Le Loi High School to continue striving for excellence in their studies.

"Ahead lies a new journey, where you will leave your family, teachers, and friends to enter university. I hope you will always maintain your studious spirit, independence, and soon fulfill your dream of becoming a technology engineer," Mr. Sau confided.
