In October 1976, Mr. Thật enlisted in the army and was discharged in May 1981, returning to his hometown and continuing to participate in social work in various capacities at the local level. In 2018, he retired and received a lump-sum payment. Although he had a house in the central area, convenient for daily life, he chose to return to Cây village as his place of residence and livelihood. Mr. Thật confided: "This year I am almost 70 years old, but the spirit of a soldier still motivates me. As long as I have my health, I will continue to work to set an example for my children and grandchildren, and to make life more meaningful."

Mr. Nguyen Van That (on the right) introduces his family's economic model. |
Once his children had grown up and found stable jobs, he wanted to find an economic path suitable for his age but still creating long-term value. Initially, the family only had a small garden. Through accumulation over time, he boldly bought more land to expand the scale. Today, on a farm area of nearly 4.5 hectares, he applies a scientific layered planting method. The upper part is a production forest with acacia and eucalyptus trees; below are oranges, pomelos, Terminalia catappa, bananas, dragon fruit, intercropped with short-term crops like ginger and pineapple. In addition, there are hundreds of orchid plants and miniature landscapes. On average, his family earns over 300 million VND per year from these crops.
Not only is Mr. Thật a successful businessman, but he also consistently demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility towards the community. His family has repeatedly donated land for local road expansion; he actively participates in various movements and fundraising campaigns to support flood victims in Central Vietnam, contributing to the Fund for the Poor and other social welfare activities.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phong, Deputy Head of Cay village, said: “Mr. Nguyen Van That is an exemplary veteran, wholeheartedly dedicated to the common good, and also a diligent and creative farmer, always upholding the qualities of a 'Soldier of Uncle Ho' in his daily life. His economic model brings economic benefits to his family and inspires many households in the village to boldly switch crops, effectively utilize hillside land, and strive to become wealthy in their homeland.”
