VHO - On the afternoon of June 5 in Hanoi , Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO Hoang Dao Cuong had a meeting and worked with Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko, former Assistant Director General of UNESCO for African priorities and external relations, candidate for Director General of UNESCO.

Welcoming Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko to visit and work at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong emphasized that the support of UNESCO, with the personal role of Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko, within the framework of the United Nations mechanism, has made an important contribution to the sustainable socio -economic development of Vietnam.

At the same time, effectively promote the cultural values, image of the country and people of Vietnam; contribute to the successful implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 in Vietnam, promote culture as the foundation, driving force and goal of sustainable development in the post-2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Deputy Minister Hoang Dao Cuong also affirmed that Vietnam actively participates in and effectively implements 4 Conventions on culture, 1 Convention on sports and major mechanisms and forums of UNESCO.

Vietnam is trusted by the international community, taking on positions requiring deep expertise such as the Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions 2021 - 2025, the Intergovernmental Committee of the UNESCO 2003 Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage 2022 - 2026, the World Heritage Committee for the 2023 - 2027 term...

In particular, recently, Vietnam continued to have 2 types of heritage recognized by UNESCO, including the reliefs on nine bronze cauldrons in the Royal Palace (Documental Heritage of the Memory of the World Program for the Asia-Pacific region) and the Festival of the Lady of the Land at Sam Mountain (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity).

The titles recognized by UNESCO have contributed to raising awareness and interest of the community and society about the value of heritage; strengthening the work of preserving and promoting the value of heritage.

In the coming time, the Deputy Minister hopes that UNESCO will expand dialogue globally, connect countries for sustainable development, promote world peace, and achieve development goals.

With Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism believes that his vision, along with his many years of experience in the "house" of UNESCO, will help him continue to make many important contributions within the framework of UNESCO, especially supporting developing countries, including African countries.

The Deputy Minister also sent his best wishes to Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko for success in the election of UNESCO Director General, and to continue to pay attention and affection to Vietnam in any position.

For his part, Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko sent his congratulations on Vietnam's achievements in socio-economic development, in which culture plays an important role.

Both sides hope that Vietnam will have more cooperative activities with UNESCO.

Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko also expressed his joy that Vietnam has many heritages recognized by UNESCO and said that Vietnam is a typical example in preserving and promoting the value of heritage.

Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko hopes that Vietnam - UNESCO will concretize the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two sides into specific activities and projects.

Mr. Firmin Edouard Matoko also said that with his experience, he is ready to support Vietnam in the work of preserving and promoting heritage values.
