Decision No. 756/QD-TTg issued on April 14, 2025 clearly states that, regarding the planning orientation for the conservation space and the restoration of landscape architecture in the relic protection area, at other component relic sites (in addition to the northern bank relic cluster and the southern bank relic cluster), the landscape axis of Ben Hai River and Sa Lung River is established in the east-west direction. At the same time, connecting the relics: Cua Tung Police Station, Tung Luat ferry (ferry B), Cua Tung ferry (ferry A), Luy ferry (ferry C) and Thuong Dong and Duc Duc ferry of Quang Tri province.
Ferry C in Vinh Giang commune, Vinh Linh district (formerly, now Cua Tung commune, Quang Tri province) is also included in the project group to research and preserve the component relics of the Hien Luong-Ben Hai special national historical relic. Accordingly, expand, complete, and edit the scientific records of the component relics; build a database on the preservation of intangible cultural values associated with the relic area. In addition, research and link the Hien Luong-Ben Hai special national relic with the Truong Son Martyrs' Cemetery, Quang Tri Citadel, Dong Ha Military Port and other relics in the North Central region.
During the years of the resistance war against the US to save the country, at the "fire coordinates" of Vinh Linh, Quang Tri, in the area on both sides of the Ben Hai River, there were many ferry piers transporting troops, military provisions, weapons... from the north bank to support the southern battlefield.
However, there is a little-known ferry terminal where boats carrying seriously wounded soldiers and martyrs from the south bank back to the north bank dock.
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the complete liberation of Quang Tri, a group of reporters from Nhan Dan Newspaper visited Vinh Linh district (old), where the 17th parallel once divided the North and South during the war, and met and learned from the few witnesses who still knew about this ferry.
Some witnesses in Co My village, Vinh Giang commune (formerly, now Cua Tung commune) living just a few hundred meters from the old ferry C said that the ferry that transported wounded soldiers and martyrs was also called ferry C, or ferry Luy.
The series of articles "Searching for the martyrs' ferry on the banks of Hien Luong" published on Nhan Dan Online Newspaper on March 19, 2025 received many emotional responses from veterans, former youth volunteers, local people and the Quang Tri provincial government.
After that, a series of newspapers also sought out witnesses and delved deeper into the story surrounding the historic ferry of a glorious period.
The planning to preserve, renovate and restore the C ferry site in particular and the Hien Luong-Ben Hai special national historical site in general has met the expectations of the people, especially veterans and soldiers who fought bravely for national independence. More than anything, this work is extremely necessary for the younger generation, so that when they return to the old battlefield, they have more opportunities to understand and remember, and show gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for the Fatherland...
