Two days earlier, at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Chiba City, Japan, Nguyen An Thinh (grade 12) and Nguyen Dinh Kien (grade 11), two students from Tran Phu High School for the Gifted ( Hai Phong City), won gold and silver medals. This year, the Vietnamese IMO team has 6 members, winning 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals, ranking 6th out of more than 110 countries and territories, after China, the US, South Korea, Romania and Japan.
On the afternoon of July 13, Hai Phong City leaders awarded two male students who won international math medals and teachers who trained them.
According to the policy approved by the Hai Phong City People's Council in 2018, in addition to the certificate of merit from the Chairman of the City People's Committee, Hai Phong awarded Nguyen An Thinh 500 million VND in cash and Nguyen Dinh Kien 400 million VND.
Teacher Le Duc Thinh, who directly trained Nguyen An Thinh, was awarded 250 million VND, and teacher Nguyen Viet Anh, who trained Nguyen Dinh Kien, was awarded 200 million VND. This amount is equivalent to 50% of the amount spent on prize-winning students.
Hai Phong spent 1.6 billion VND to reward students and teachers with high achievements in the exam.
In addition, the Math team teachers of Tran Phu High School for the Gifted were also awarded 180 million VND. Meanwhile, the school's board of directors, consisting of 4 teachers, were each awarded 22.5 million VND.
The total bonus is more than 1.6 billion VND.
It is known that 4 years ago, Nguyen An Thinh's older brother, Nguyen Thuan Hung, was also one of two contestants in the Vietnamese team that won the gold medal at IMO 2019. Currently, Hung is studying computer science at the National University of Singapore - the school ranked 8th in the world university rankings, according to QS.
Since Vietnam sent contestants to the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1974, this is the first time two brothers have won gold medals at the competition. Previously, the Vietnamese IMO team had brothers who won silver medals: Nguyen The Trung (in 1995) and Nguyen Trung Tu (in 1999).
