In the first two months of 2025, Vietnam-China trade continued to thrive, reaching $31.2 billion.

According to data from the General Statistics Office – Ministry of Finance , in the first two months of 2025, trade between Vietnam and China continued to grow. China is Vietnam's largest import market.

Specifically, in the first two months of 2025, exports to China reached $7.9 billion, a decrease of 2.1% compared to the same period last year. Imports from this market reached $23.3 billion, an increase of 20.7% compared to the same period last year.

Speaking at a trade promotion meeting with the system of Vietnamese trade offices abroad in February 2025, Mr. Nong Duc Lai, Commercial Counselor of Vietnam in China, said that China is a leading important trading partner, the second largest export market, and the largest source of goods, especially raw materials for production, for Vietnam.

Exports to China decreased slightly in the first two months of the year due to increased quality control measures in that market (Illustrative image).

However, since the beginning of the year, China has tightened import restrictions on some goods from Vietnam, including durian. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the value of fruit and vegetable exports in February 2025 is estimated at 350 million USD, bringing the total value of fruit and vegetable exports in the first two months of 2025 to 724 million USD, compared to 970 million USD in the same period last year.

Compared to the same period last year, the value of fruit and vegetable exports to the Chinese market decreased by 43%.

Exports of fruits and vegetables to China have fallen sharply, mainly due to the country's stricter inspections of residue levels of certain chemicals in imported fruits from all countries since the beginning of this year, including durian - a key export item of Vietnam.

Accordingly, all durian shipments intended for export to China must have their cadmium and Yellow O residue analysis results obtained from laboratories recognized by China.

Therefore, durian exports to China had to be temporarily suspended to adapt to the new regulations. In the first 40 days of this year, approximately 3,500 tons of durian were exported to China, a decrease of 80% compared to the same period last year. This is one of the reasons for the decline in exports to China in the first two months of the year. Authorities are urgently seeking solutions to increase exports to this market.

To promote trade between Vietnamese localities and China, the People's Committee of Lao Cai province, in coordination with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), will soon organize a series of events titled "Meeting 2025: Lao Cai - A Center for Economic and Trade Connections between Vietnam and ASEAN Countries with Southwest China".

This is one of the activities aimed at promoting trade between Lao Cai in particular and other localities in general with China in the coming time.

In 2024, the import and export turnover between the two countries reached US$205.2 billion, marking a record high for bilateral trade. This represents an increase of US$33.3 billion compared to 2023. With this result, China has become the first trading partner with which Vietnam has established a trade volume exceeding US$200 billion.
