On July 4, Bach Mai Hospital announced that the hospital's Digestive Surgery - Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery Department had just performed surgery on a case of rectal rupture due to detoxification using coffee enema.
The patient was a 38-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital with severe lower abdominal pain and bloody stools. She had previously used coffee enema twice, one week apart. On the third visit, the woman experienced severe lower abdominal pain and bleeding through the anus.
Doctors warn about coffee enema detox
Examination and necessary tests, MRI showed image of retroperitoneal air collection, suspected rectal rupture. Doctors decided to perform emergency surgery to treat the injury.
During surgery, a rupture of the lower third of the rectum was noted, causing a peritoneal abscess. The surgical team sutured the rectal rupture, drained the retroperitoneal space, and created an artificial anus in the sigmoid colon.
After 14 days, the patient was discharged from the hospital and was able to eat and live normally. However, the female patient will have to undergo another surgery in a few months to close the colostomy.
Doctors recommend that there is currently a detoxification method circulating on the internet that is said to have many effects such as preventing constipation and curing all diseases. That is the method of inserting coffee into the anus with the aim of "cleaning" the colon. In fact, injecting coffee into the anus will reduce the stimulation of the rectum, in the long run, it will cause the rectum to lose its reflexes, and if you do not use coffee enema, you will not be able to defecate.
Loss of rectal reflex also increases the risk of rectal rupture during subsequent enemas, because the patient no longer feels the urge to defecate, so it is easy to inject too much medicine into the rectum, causing rupture. Not to mention that when taking medicine through an unnatural route, it will push the intestinal microflora into an imbalanced state, causing colitis.
Doctors advise to note that colonic irrigation is a treatment method that needs to be prescribed by specialists and performed at licensed medical facilities.
