On May 29, the Swiss Embassy held an event to celebrate 35 years of development cooperation with Vietnam and announced the Cooperation Program for the period 2025-2028.
In 1991, Switzerland’s official development assistance (ODA) program for Vietnam shifted its focus from poverty reduction to promoting sustainable economic development. Over the past 34 years, Switzerland has committed CHF650 million (equivalent to approximately USD800 million).
These supports have contributed to strengthening the legal framework, improving the safety of financial services, promoting sustainable exports, improving urban planning and creating a more favorable environment for business and investment.

Trade promotion activities have supported more than 60 organizations and businesses, motivating more than 10,000 businesses to implement innovative initiatives and produce export goods in a more sustainable manner.
More than 2,000 start-ups have been supported and successfully raised a total of CHF 124 million in investment capital. Around 500,000 small and medium-sized enterprises have been provided with an additional USD 33 billion in loans through innovation chain credit financing mechanisms.
Converting industrial parks to eco-industrial park models has helped improve environmental standards, saving 850,000m3 of water and reducing 39,560 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
In the coming time, the Swiss Government will continue to accompany Vietnam. The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will allocate a budget of 50 million USD to support Vietnam for the period 2025-2028. Since 2013, Vietnam has become a priority country in SECO's economic development cooperation program.
The partnership will focus on three key areas: promoting sustainable trade and innovation, strengthening sustainable public and private finance, and developing climate-resilient urban and industrial development.
Mr. Thomas Gass, Ambassador of Switzerland to Vietnam, said that the new program for the period 2025-2028 demonstrates Switzerland's strong commitment to accompany Vietnam on its journey to become a resilient high-income country by 2045 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
The program's priorities are fully consistent with Vietnam's development orientation and make practical contributions to plans to open a new era of development for Vietnam.
