The research team from the University of St Gallen, in collaboration with the Swiss Labor Association, reviewed analyses conducted at 461 companies that implement government regulations on equal pay. The study covered about 500,000 salaried workers in Switzerland.
According to the survey results, 99.3% of companies pay salaries in accordance with the regulations stated in the European country's gender equality law.
Regarding the gender pay gap, 89% of companies reported no gender pay gap and 3.3% of companies did not explain the pay gap between male and female employees. Only 3 companies showed a gender pay gap above the federal government’s 5% threshold.
For employers' organizations, the survey shows that federal government directives are being followed at both the industry and regional levels.
According to the Swiss Employers Association, the results of the study by the University of St Gallen are a positive signal for the Swiss federal government. A report in 2020 showed that Switzerland is one of the countries with the largest difference in wages between men and women, according to which women receive about 18.4% less than men for the same job.
A year later, Switzerland enacted a gender equality law, requiring companies with more than 100 employees to pay equal wages and be transparent about them.
The Swiss employers’ association says companies need to focus on fair pay. The pay gap needs to be tackled at its root, with companies focusing on the causes of the pay gap, particularly the fact that women are more likely to have career breaks. Women need to benefit from conditions that allow them to work in the same way as men.
