Actively protecting Vietnamese citizens in landslides in Laos

Immediately after receiving information that there were Vietnamese people in the landslide in Laos, the Consulate General in Savannakhet proactively coordinated with Lao authorities to search.

Responding to a reporter's question on August 17 requesting information on citizen protection for 45 Vietnamese people rescued in the landslide on Highway 8 in Laos, and 1 Vietnamese person who died in an accident in Khammouane province, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang stated:

Immediately after receiving information about this landslide, following the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the Consulate General in Savannakhet proactively coordinated with Lao authorities to search for our citizens.

It is known that on the afternoon of August 14, the body of a man was found. The Consulate General also coordinated with Lao authorities to carry out funeral procedures and notify the victim's family.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our condolences to the victim's family as well as to those affected by this landslide.

Previously, from July 27 to August 2, heavy rain caused landslides on Highway 8A from Phou Hay area, Khounkham village, Khounkham district, Khammouane province to Nongkok village, Khamkeut district, Bolikhamxay province.

According to Mr. Keovilay Xayabouth, head of Khounkham district, these landslides have trapped more than 70 people in the area, including 45 Vietnamese.

By August 6, he announced that all Vietnamese citizens had been found, except for the driver, Duong Cong Long, 35, a resident of Ha Tinh province, Vietnam. Local authorities have launched an extensive search campaign for the missing driver.

However, eight days later, the Department of Information, Culture and Tourism in Khounkham district said it had found the body of driver Long - who drove for Heng Seun Company in Vietnam.
