“Her Bookstore” by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh has both paperback and hardcover.
The challenge for readers in this new work is the literary space set in a 3-in-1 structure. Readers start from "Her Bookstore" - a bookstore in a modern city with the characters "Anh" and "Di" and interesting dialogues that no one understands but only the two of them. From here, the story is led to relate to two stages of the life of the character "Anh" in the style of a story within a story through "Before the age of fifteen" and "The other side of the Crow Hill". In turn, the characters Quyen, Thinh, Khai, Ngo, Giang, Han... with humorous, bitter, sweet stories intertwined are opened...
Although there are innovations in the writing style to leave readers more space to stop and ponder over the plot and each character; with this new work, readers are still immersed in Nguyen Nhat Anh's literature. The writing style and words on each page are simple but strangely attractive because the personality of each character is clearly expressed through dialogue and actions that are carefully selected, immediately engraved in the reader's mind. It is a rural space with a village school and naughty students, sometimes impulsive and reckless, sometimes extremely sensitive and vulnerable.
Another very dear point is that no matter how dramatic, contradictory, or unjust the plot is, the reactions of the characters do not push each other to the end, but instead leave a space for humanity to remain. Because in “Her Bookstore”, although writer Nguyen Nhat Anh does not avoid the dark side, the selfishness and the denial of responsibility of some adults, causing children who have to go through an unhappy, tragic childhood to become rebellious and stubborn; he still makes room to show kindness to heal the childhood trauma of the characters.
Reading “Her Bookstore”, I once again completely agree with the epigraph of poet Nguyen Quang Thieu, Chairman of the Vietnam Writers Association : “Nguyen Nhat Anh is a special case in the era I live in. The number of books he wrote, the number of copies printed and the number of times each of his books was reprinted is astonishing. He is a special figure in contemporary Vietnamese literary life. In the history of Vietnamese literature, we must dedicate pages to his name. I have read some of his works very carefully to try to find out why his books have been so long loved by young readers. I could not find the answer. I only know that his writings are simple, pure, and ordinary, but imbued with poetic spirit. These are the beauties of humanity presented in a modern, alluring style.”
