On November 15th, a ceremony was held in Go Cong Dong district, Tien Giang province to award ASC certification (an international certification) and sign a value chain linkage agreement for Tien Giang clams.
| ASC certification is considered a "passport" that allows Vietnamese clam products to enter many new and demanding markets around the world. |
The program involves provincial agencies and departments, the People's Committee of Go Cong Dong district, OXFAM, ICAFIS, the consulting firm RECERD, the certification organization Control Union, the clam farming community of Tien Giang province, and clam processing and export businesses in the Mekong Delta region.
At the ceremony, Ms. Tran Thi Be Bay, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, said that ASC is a certification for sustainable and responsible aquaculture, which has gained the trust of many international markets. The ASC certification for clam farming in Go Cong Dong district is a good condition for promoting the brand and products of clams to domestic and international consumers, thereby facilitating the export of this local specialty product and is considered a positive sign for Vietnam's fisheries industry.
According to Mr. Dinh Xuan Lap, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Center for Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries (ICAFIS), clams are one of Vietnam's four key aquatic species (along with shrimp, catfish, and tilapia) and are popular in many markets around the world, such as Europe, America, Japan, Malaysia, and Australia.
When clam farming developed, it effectively utilized coastal tidal flats and created jobs for approximately 200,000 workers. Tien Giang is one of the provinces with a developed clam farming industry in Vietnam. Clam farming in Go Cong Dong district existed before 1975. In 1990, the People's Committee of Tien Giang province divided the land into plots and leased them to households and the Go Cong Dong District Tidal Flat Management Board to protect and develop the clam farming industry.
However, clam farming in Go Cong Dong is often affected by climate change, diseases, fluctuating prices, and unstable income, especially in the context of the "global economic recession" and increasingly high demands from import markets...
Currently, clam farming in the coastal area of Go Cong is developing quite strongly. According to the 2022 survey results, the entire province has 530 households that have been leased land by the state to farm clams, contributing to solving many socio-economic problems of the locality and providing jobs for thousands of workers.

ASC certification is considered a "passport" that allows Vietnamese clam products to enter many new and demanding markets around the world.
