NDO - The English proficiency index of Vietnamese people ranks 63rd out of 116 countries, with proficiency at the "low" level.
On November 13, Education First Vietnam (EF Vietnam) officially announced the 2024 English Proficiency Index (EPI 2024).
This is a prestigious assessment and ranking report in the world, published annually since 2011 with a scale of more than 110 countries and territories.
According to the EF EPI 2024 index, the English proficiency index of Vietnamese people ranked 63rd out of 116 countries, with 498 points, with a proficiency level at the "low" level.
Thus, Vietnam's 2024 ranking has dropped 5 places compared to 2023, from 58 to 63. This ranking is also quite far from the best ranking that Vietnam achieved in 2019, ranked 52.
In Asia, Vietnam ranks 8th in English proficiency with 498 points, after Singapore (609 points), Philippines (570 points), Malaysia (566 points)...
Mr. Mark Do, Director of EF Education First Vietnam said: “Investing in developing foreign language skills for the young generation has always received strong attention from agencies, departments, and sectors, as well as from parents and students themselves. We are proud to witness the success of young Vietnamese people as they increasingly develop soft skills, including English.”

The EPI 2024, analyzed from test results of 2.1 million non-native English speakers, aged 18 and over, in 116 countries and regions.
Global English proficiency is declining, according to the EPI 2024 report. This is the fourth consecutive year that global English proficiency has declined, with 60% of the countries in the index scoring lower than last year.
However, one bright spot is that the 18-20 age group has halted its long-term decline (up 5 points from 2023 after falling 89 points since 2015). However, it is still too early to predict whether the recovery trend can continue.
This year's study found that the service, aviation, media, sports and entertainment industries are the ones with the highest English proficiency levels among workers.
For many professionals, despite high levels of professional experience, lower-than-average English proficiency is a barrier to career advancement and access to information.
Asia recorded the largest decline in English proficiency compared to last year. Meanwhile, in Europe, English proficiency also fell slightly. In Latin America, English proficiency remained stable after years of growth.
In contrast, in the Middle East, English proficiency has been growing steadily, led by Saudi Arabia.
