Supporting the disadvantaged from community food pantries

Located at 53 Le Dinh Chinh (Ngu Hanh Son ward), the Da Nang community food warehouse is located within the premises of the Da Nang Red Cross Center for the Elderly and Disabled.

This is a place to store and distribute food and a bridge between businesses, manufacturers, social organizations and those in need of help.

According to the Vietnam Food Bank Network, each community food pantry not only receives and distributes goods but also serves as a place to foster compassion and spread the spirit of sharing. It is a journey of joining hands to realize the goal of “leaving no one behind”.

Food Bank Da Nang was established with the expectation of contributing to the building of a humane and sustainable food ecosystem in the city. It is also the 24th member of the Vietnam Food Bank Network, and the 8th unit in the Central region.

After only a short time of operation, Food Bank Da Nang has spread and created many positive values. Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Tuyet, Acting Director of the Center for Care of the Elderly and the Disabled of the Red Cross of Da Nang shared that thanks to the food warehouse, the center has become more known to many benefactors, thereby receiving more attention and contributions from the community.

Many benefactors support food such as vegetables, eggs, rice, bread, or even free meals. This is an extremely valuable resource to care for disabled children and the disadvantaged who are being cared for at the center.

Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh (Que Son commune) is one of nearly 60 disabled people living at the Da Nang Red Cross Center for the Elderly and Disabled. Ngoc Anh shared that thanks to the community food pantry, everyone's meals are more complete, reducing the burden on the center.

“When we saw so many benefactors supporting us, we were very happy. I am truly grateful to those who thought of us, helping us have more confidence to overcome difficulties,” Ngoc Anh said.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Le Tuyet, the maintenance and care of the disabled at the center has received great contributions from many benefactors in the city. Since August 10, Da Nang Food Bank has received the support of many benefactors and benefactors. On the opening day alone, Da Nang Food Bank received more than 100 million VND in support, including: 2 tons of vegetables, tubers, fruits, 900kg of rice, 100 meals, 1,360 boxes of cakes, 50 cartons of instant noodles, 1,000 eggs and many other necessities.

According to Ms. Le Thi Nhu Hong, President of the Da Nang Red Cross Society, the highlight of Da Nang Food Bank is not only in its function of receiving and distributing food but also in its multi-dimensional connectivity.

From businesses, manufacturers to social organizations, volunteer groups or generous individuals, everyone can join hands to contribute. This connection helps the food warehouse always maintain an abundant supply, timely support the right people, and at the same time minimize food waste.

This is also a way to gradually form a sustainable model within the community. However, for the model to truly go into depth and spread widely, the cooperation of the whole society is the key factor.

“With the spirit of solidarity and constant efforts, I believe that Food Bank Da Nang will become a symbol of sharing and affection in the heart of the city,” Ms. Hong shared.
