Cabin rules still exist to not only make your life (and the lives of your fellow passengers) more comfortable, but also to keep everyone on board safe. Check out these etiquette and safety mistakes that passengers make when flying, according to flight attendants.

Use the restroom during takeoff and landing
The biggest annoyance for many flight attendants is when people get up to use the bathroom during takeoff and landing, or right when they board the plane when people are trying to board and seat themselves, former flight attendant Amanda McDowell told Travel + Leisure. “Please don’t do this. We need to be able to get on and off the plane freely to make sure everyone is safe and seated properly to keep their balance during takeoff and landing.” If possible, try to keep your bathroom break a quiet time at cruising altitude.
Remove your bag from the overhead compartment before the plane comes to a complete stop.
We've all seen it happen - as soon as the plane lands, someone jumps up to grab their belongings from the overhead bin. Don't do this. Only stand up safely when the plane is at the gate, not when it has come to a stop. Some passengers try to rush to their seats or grab their carry-on bags before the plane has come to a complete stop, which can be dangerous, says former flight attendant Kimberly Shaw. "It's important to always follow the safety procedures given by the crew and wait until the plane has come to a complete stop before trying to stand up or retrieve any belongings."
Rude to the crew
When you're on a plane, the flight attendants are in charge and ready to assist passengers if things go wrong. "Remember that the flight attendants and pilots are working hard to ensure a safe and comfortable flight, and treat them with kindness and respect."
Not wearing seat belt when instructed
“The seat belt sign keeps you safe in unexpected turbulence, and ignoring it can put you and others at risk,” says Shaw. Turbulence is not always predictable, and if you hit an unexpected patch of air, you could be thrown out of your seat and seriously injured.
Try to pass the food cart
One of the worst things a flight attendant can do is stand up and try to pass the food carts during service, says former flight attendant Josephine Remo. The carts are heavy to push around, and there’s always little time to serve multiple people. The aisle is a small space, and crews don’t like having people standing behind them waiting to pass.
Put shoes in the aisle
"It's a tripping hazard for everyone on the plane," says former flight attendant Jo Jo Harder. "Passengers should put their shoes under the seat in front of them." Note that you really don't want to go barefoot on a plane, especially in the bathroom, which is filthy.
Leave the toilet messy
If you use the airplane toilet, take the time to clean up after yourself. Many people don’t keep their toilets clean, which can lead to a nasty mess. Passengers should wipe down the toilet seat and sink, then throw the tissue in the trash. So always wear shoes in the toilet – you never know what liquid is spilling on the floor.
Drink tap water
A viral TikTok video by flight attendant Kat Kamalani recommends only drinking water from cans or bottles. In the video, she claims that "the water tanks on planes are never cleaned and they're disgusting." So drinking tap water from the toilet is a no-no — and you shouldn't make hot coffee or tea either, since they're drawn from those tanks.
