Saving electricity: From personal awareness to community action

In modern life, electricity is not only a source of energy for daily life and production, but also the "bloodline" that nourishes all activities...

11 Lai Chau - where the terrain is rugged, the climate is harsh, and people's lives are still difficult, the idea of saving electricity is gradually permeating people's awareness. Not through empty calls but through specific, creative and practical actions. From villages and residential areas in remote areas, the movement to save electricity has spread. Many households have replaced incandescent bulbs with energy-saving LED lights. Not only that, solar power systems have also appeared on many rooftops, lighting up the hope for a green - clean - sustainable future.

Lai Chau Electricity Company is one of the "seed sowers" for that meaningful journey. With the motto "going to every alley, knocking on every door", the unit has closely coordinated with the government and mass organizations to directly propagate and advise people on how to use electricity safely and effectively. Especially, during the peak hot months, the company has implemented many flexible measures to promptly reduce the load and limit the power shortage.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho - Deputy Director of Lai Chau Electricity Company shared: "We have coordinated with news agencies and social organizations to promote propaganda in many forms such as: mobile loudspeakers, leaflet distribution, direct propaganda. At the same time, affiliated units also regularly go to the grassroots to check and guide people to use electrical equipment properly, avoiding waste. Thanks to that, people's awareness of saving electricity is increasingly improved."

Along with the propaganda, many support activities were also carried out such as: free replacement of old light bulbs for poor households, repairing electrical systems, installing solar water heaters, deploying rooftop solar power installation. All of these are aimed at helping people reduce living expenses, at the same time, raising awareness about using clean energy.

In addition to the efforts of the Electricity industry, many businesses and organizations in Lai Chau have also proactively contributed to the cause of saving and using renewable energy. One of the pioneering units is Viettel Construction Lai Chau Branch. Major Tran Minh Quang - Branch Director said: "We have been actively promoting the benefits of solar power. Not only saving electricity costs, solar power is also a solution to protect the environment and reduce the load on the national grid. We hope that every household can access and use this green energy source in the near future."

It is known that since the beginning of the year, Viettel has also donated more than 150 solar lights to border communes, contributing to lighting up the border, supporting security and order, and helping people travel conveniently at night.

Saving electricity is not too difficult, it starts with simple habits: turning off the lights when leaving the room, taking advantage of natural light, using equipment with energy-saving labels. The story of Mr. Tran Van Phuong's family in Than Uyen commune is a living proof. As a rice milling business, Mr. Phuong's previous electricity costs ranged from 1 to 2 million VND/month, especially during peak season. However, after switching the entire lighting system to LED lights, the cost of electricity for daily life has decreased significantly (to only about 700,000 VND).

Mr. Phuong shared: “In the past, my family used a lot of incandescent bulbs and did milling services, so it was very expensive. Since switching to LED lights, the electricity bill has decreased significantly. I also often remind family members to turn off unnecessary electrical equipment, which is both economical and meaningful.”

To save electricity by using "green" energy, Ms. Bui Thi Hoa in Phong Tho commune boldly invested in installing solar lights. Ms. Hoa shared: On average, I have to pay 2-3 million VND for electricity every month. Especially in the hot season or winter, the electricity bill doubles or triples. After learning about the benefits of solar power, in early July 2025, I invested nearly 200 million VND to install a solar lighting system to serve the electricity needs of the cafe, family, and at the same time protect the environment. Solar power is useful in helping me save about 80% of the monthly electricity bill.

Using natural light sources such as solar energy has contributed to saving electricity and reducing pressure on the national grid.

Thanks to the consensus of the people, the government and businesses, the electricity saving journey in Lai Chau has achieved many impressive results. In the first 8 months of 2025, the whole province saved 4.91 million kWh, of which 1.82 million kWh was saved during the peak hot season (from June to August), equivalent to billions of VND. Along with that, Lai Chau Electricity Company also installed 100% of electronic meters for more than 119,000 customers, helping people easily monitor their daily electricity consumption through the customer care application. Many programs such as "Electricity Saving Schools", "Earth Hour", running races... were also organized enthusiastically, attracting a large number of participants.

Saving electricity is not a big thing, it is choosing the right equipment, it is the habit of turning off the lights... In the border area of Lai Chau, these seemingly small things create huge changes, helping people save costs, protect national resources, and most importantly, act for a sustainable green future. In an era when energy is becoming a global concern, Lai Chau people are proving that, whether in urban or rural areas, plains or highlands, saving electricity and using clean energy can still start with us. Let's start today, to spread the message together: "Save electricity today, protect life tomorrow!".
