Military medical examination is an issue that many people are interested in at the end of the year because this is the time when localities will conduct military medical examinations to prepare for the new recruitment. So, what are the height and weight standards for military service?

According to the Law on Military Service 2015, military service is the honorable duty of citizens serving in the People's Army. The age of military health examination will be the age of military service. Accordingly, citizens who are 18 years old will be called for military service, the age of military service is from 18 years old to 25 years old. For citizens who have received college or university degrees and have been temporarily deferred from military service, the age of military service will be up to 27 years old.

According to Clause 4, Article 40 of the Law on Military Service, the military service medical examination period takes place from November 1 to December 31 every year.

In case of necessity for national defense and security reasons, citizens may be called up for military service a second time. The time for the second medical examination to call citizens for military service will be decided by the Prime Minister .

According to Article 31 of the Law on Military Service 2015, citizens are called to join the army when they meet the following criteria: Clear background; Strictly comply with the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws; Good health to serve in the army according to regulations; Have appropriate educational level.

Thus, one of the important criteria for citizens to be called up for military service is to be healthy enough to serve in the army according to regulations. Therefore, before joining the army, citizens are required to undergo a medical examination to check whether they meet the standards or not.

According to the provisions of Clause 3, Article 2, Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Defense , military service health examination is the examination, classification, and conclusion of health for citizens called for military service who have passed the health screening and citizens registering for the military entrance exam, carried out by the District Military Service Health Examination Council.

In addition to the military service health check, there is also the military service health re-examination and military service health assessment. This regulation is to avoid mistakes during the military service health check.

In particular, selecting citizens with health types 1, 2, 3 according to regulations in Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP regulating health examination for military service.

For important and confidential agencies, units, and positions in the Army; Honor Guard and Ceremonial Forces; and professional Military Guard and Control Forces, selection shall be conducted to ensure specific standards according to regulations of the Ministry of National Defense.

Citizens with health category 3, refractive eye defects (myopia 1.5 diopters or more, hyperopia of all degrees), drug addiction, HIV infection, AIDS are not called to enlist in the Army.

Therefore, if a citizen's height and weight standards fall into categories 1, 2, or 3, he or she will meet one of the conditions for military service.

Specifically, the standards for height and weight (also known as physical classification standards) are guided by Joint Circular 16/2016/TTLT-BYT-BQP as follows:

In cases of being overweight or underweight, the BMI will be considered (see the examination notes).

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a body mass index that assesses the correlation between height and weight:

BMI = Weight (kg) : [Height (m)]^2 (Square)

BMI is considered in cases where physical fitness is met, but there is an imbalance between height and weight, and cases with BMI ≥ 30 will not be accepted.
