In May 1948, Battalion 307 of Military Region 8 was established and won consecutive resounding victories in the battles of Thap Muoi, Moc Hoa, La Bang... To honor the achievements of Battalion 307 and encourage the common fighting spirit, Military Region 8 opened a literary and artistic composition contest. Poet Nguyen Binh, who was working in the South at that time, responded to the campaign with the poem "Cuu Long Giang". Nguyen Huu Tri, who was working in Military Region 8 at that time, composed the song "Battalion 307" based on the poem by Nguyen Binh: "Who has ever crossed the Mekong River/ The Mekong River has surging waves/ Who has ever heard the sound of the battalion/ The sound of Battalion 307"... The song was quickly popularized from the platoons of Battalion 307, spread to units in Military Region 8 and spread throughout the South. On October 1, 1950, the song was first broadcast on Voice of Vietnam Radio , spreading quickly among soldiers and people across the country, like a military anthem of the invincible army. The song was awarded Second Prize in the literary and artistic composition campaign at that time.
Nguyen Huu Tri (1917-1979), real name Nguyen Van Bay, was from My Tho ( Tien Giang ). He was passionate about music since childhood and could play many musical instruments. After 1945, he joined the Viet Minh and was in charge of the military band of Military Region 8. He also composed a number of other songs such as "Pha Duong" (based on To Huu's poem), "Ba Nguoi Chien Si Nam 40", "Tieng Chuong Uc Han"... In 1952, Nguyen Huu Tri became seriously ill and had to return home for treatment. From then until 1979, he taught music and lived in Vinh My A commune, Hoa Binh district, Bac Lieu province until he passed away from a stroke.
For musician Nguyen Huu Tri, the most precious reward for him is the song "Battalion 307" which is like a military song that summarizes the strength and determination to fight and win of our army, forever going down in the history of resistance in the South and the whole country.
