Stress – the disease of modern society
Stress is a state of nervous tension, including many factors such as physics, chemistry and the reaction of an individual trying to adapt to a change or pressure from outside or inside. When encountering a stressor, the body will secrete hormones that provide strong energy to the muscles, faster breathing, increased heart rate.
Participating in physical activities and sports is one of the effective therapies to help treat stress.
Stress can bring positive activities, stimulate concentration in study and work. However, if stress is excessive and occurs continuously, it will lead to mental and physical health depression, fatigue, poor digestion, immune deficiency and can even cause depression affecting many surrounding relationships.
According to the latest report of the World Health Organization (WHO), depression ranks third in the list of world disease burden and will be in first place in 2030 with the current growth rate.
In Vietnam, depression is the fifth leading cause of disease burden. According to a report by the Ministry of Health , it is estimated that there are currently about 3.2 million Vietnamese people suffering from depression. This number accounts for more than 3% of the population. Of which, the age group from 18 to 29 years old has the highest rate of disease (5.4%), the rate of disease is higher in women (4.2%) than in men (2.1%).
Nowadays, facing economic, work and life pressures, many people suffer from stress, affecting family happiness and surrounding relationships. Finding sources of joy in life such as sports, music... is considered an effective therapy to help "heal", improve mental health, absorb and radiate many positive energies to make life more interesting.
Psychiatrists say that to treat stress, patients need to adjust their lifestyle, rest properly, balance work and rest, relax to increase resistance to stress, eat and drink properly, exercise to keep the body healthy, not gain or lose weight too quickly, and manage time well. In particular, it is necessary to practice relaxation therapy, which has the effect of reducing heart rate and breathing rate to counteract stress reactions.
Every day is a joy…
On a weekend morning, Quy Nhon weather was drizzling with spring rain, I took the opportunity to stop by a hair salon in the Ghenh Rang market area to “fix” my dry, tangled hair after a series of busy days, and conveniently massaged my head, neck, shoulders, etc. to relax my mind, preparing for the journey back to work after a period of stagnation due to health reasons.
Members of the Quy Nhon Aerobic Club - Our Sisters performed together at Nguyen Tat Thanh Square.
Here, I happened to hear stories of women who were once stressed due to work pressure, life... but overcame this modern social disease by changing their thinking, living a positive lifestyle, finding sports, music, seeing "every day as a joy" to relieve stress, and regenerate positive energy.
Ms. Nga - the owner of the hair salon shared, before, I was stressed, leading to insomnia, causing mental fatigue, and declining health. But after going to see a doctor and receiving psychological treatment, I was advised by doctors and experts that, in addition to taking medicine, I need to exercise regularly to increase resistance and improve health.
“So every early morning, late afternoon, or free time, I jog, swim, do aerobics, yoga… Since finding and maintaining my favorite sports, I feel more excited, optimistic, sleep better, and my health has improved significantly,” Ms. Nga confided.
According to Ms. Nga, participating in classes and sports clubs, in addition to improving health, is also an opportunity to exchange, share, learn experiences in work, life and raising children... Thanks to that, the soul is open, thinking positively and loving life more.
Ms. An Nhien - a businesswoman who is starting a business in Da Lat City (Lam Dong), shared that due to the pressure in business, I had many sleepless nights, the situation lasted for a long time, leading to stress, affecting family happiness and quality of life. On a trip back to my hometown Quy Nhon, I combined medical examination and traveling with my family to recharge my energy.
“Since I got sick, I often listen to music and play sports, and pay more attention to my diet, lifestyle, and work schedule. Occasionally, I reward myself with relaxing moments and cozy meals with my family, relatives, and friends to strengthen my love, heal my soul, improve my mental health, and improve my quality of life,” An Nhien added.
Joining sports clubs, in addition to improving health, is also an opportunity to exchange, learn and share experiences in work and life.
My “renovation” had just finished when the sky turned to evening. The rain in Quy Nhon beach town was getting heavier, but that did not make people feel heavy or sad. On the contrary, I felt light, peaceful, and relaxed as if I had just been given some positive energy.
Because I, like them, have also gone through a period of struggling with the disease of modern society called stress. But with determination, optimism and love from everyone, we have found the “rainbow after the rain”, heading towards open horizons, continuing our journey of working and contributing, adding more color and fragrance to the flower garden of life to make it more brilliant.
