Accordingly, simply changing the length of your stride when walking can increase your metabolism, burn more calories and help you lose weight better, according to the Daily Mail.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, included 18 people aged 24 and weighing an average of 70.5 kg.

Simply varying your stride length while walking can boost your metabolism, burn more calories and help you lose weight better.

First, the participants walked on a treadmill for 5 minutes at a normal stride length. Next, they were instructed to walk with steps 5-10% shorter or longer than normal. During this time, the researchers measured the participants' CO2 levels, which are an indicator of exercise intensity and metabolic rate.

The results found that for every 1% increase in step length, calories burned increased by 0.7%.

Experts claim: The results show that walking with an uneven stride significantly increases the metabolic rate while walking, according to the Daily Mail.

More frequent and larger changes in stride length increase the metabolic rate of walking, said study co-author Adam Grimmitt, an exercise physiologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

These findings are most relevant to older adults, especially those with neurological conditions, as they tend to take more irregular steps while walking.

The body has to work to cope with the short-to-long stride or vice versa, which can increase muscle contraction and metabolic rate, the researchers explain. The study data showed that a 2.7% increase in stride length increased the metabolic rate of walking by 1.7%.

Thus, even a small change in stride length can play a significant role in increasing metabolic rates while walking.

They also say the findings are most relevant to older adults, especially those with neurological conditions, as they tend to have more irregular stride lengths while walking.

However, the researchers admit that this change in stride length is difficult to achieve in normal, healthy people.
