The guitar, used by Paul McCartney to record The Beatles' first two albums, has been dubbed "the most iconic lost instrument of all time" by research group The Lost Bass Project. McCartney played the guitar on The Beatles' singles, including the 1963 hits She Loves You and All My Loving .

"The bass guitar was the beginning of the Beatles' introduction to the world, the 'craze' that became known as Beatlemania. That's why it's so important," Nick Wass, one of the founders of the Lost Bass Project, told Reuters .
The Lost Bass Project's public appeal last year was shared around the world . "As a result of the publicity surrounding the stolen guitar, a person living in Hastings, on the south coast of England, contacted Paul McCartney's company and returned the guitar," Mass said. The instrument was returned last year, but the information was only made public on February 15.
The Lost Bass Project said the instrument was stolen from a van while parked in the Notting Hill area of London in October 1972.

Wass told Reuters the bass guitar was “somewhat damaged” with a cracked neck and a damaged bridge that needed to be replaced. “But it can be repaired and we will get it back to work,” he confirmed.
"The guitar has been authenticated by Höfner and Paul is extremely grateful to all involved," a spokesperson on Paul McCartney's website said.
