The latest data from Kaspersky Security Company in the first quarter of 2025 shows that attacks on computers used in industrial control systems (ICS) at construction sites and factories are increasing sharply.

Compared to the global average, data from the Southeast Asia region shows that the rate of ICS computers being attacked by malware in some of the following industries is significantly higher. Specifically, the construction industry is 1.5 times higher; the manufacturing industry is 1.3 times higher; building automation is 1.2 times higher; electricity is 1.2 times higher; and ICS system engineering and integration is 1.2 times higher.

Overall, the Southeast Asia region ranked second globally in terms of blocking malicious objects on ICS computers, with a rate of 29.1%.

“The construction industry is on the rise thanks to digitalization across all aspects, from the supply chain to monitoring progress, performance and logistics,” said Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific (APAC) at Kaspersky.

However, when applying digital technology , construction businesses need to balance opportunities and risks, minimizing threats by continuously strengthening protective layers, improving resilience and resilience to threats.

Kaspersky believes that from 2025 onwards, digital industrial equipment could become targets for cyberattacks, due to limitations caused by outdated security measures. The dependence of remote facilities on cheap network equipment is a weakness that can be easily exploited by bad guys.

“Therefore, the most urgent goal now is to update the cybersecurity system for old technologies. Most importantly, businesses need to take the cybersecurity category more seriously,” said Mr. Adrian Hia.

Security experts also recommend that businesses and organizations view cybersecurity as an insurance policy to protect assets, data, and the trust of businesses with customers and partners. The construction industry needs to proactively strengthen its defenses to move towards a safe and sustainable digital future.

Construction industry faces many cybersecurity risks

The construction industry has always been one of the key factors determining the economic development of a country. In Southeast Asia, this industry is on a strong growth path, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) expected to reach 6.2% between 2024 and 2028. In particular, the construction industry in Indonesia and Vietnam is considered one of the largest and fastest growing markets in the region.

In Vietnam alone, the construction industry is recording extremely optimistic signals with a growth rate of 7.8-8.2%. This is the highest result since the beginning of the 5-year Socio-Economic Development Plan 2021-2025, exceeding the target set by the Government.

In addition, the application of digital technology such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation brings many great opportunities, helping to optimize operations in the construction sector. However, this rapid development also comes with many cybersecurity risks.
