Public bond issuance unexpectedly increased sharply

According to statistics from S&I Ratings, in the first quarter of 2025, there were 11 corporate bond issuances with a total issuance value of VND 20,100 billion, on both public issuance channels (9 issuances, total value of VND 18,100 billion) and private issuance channels (2 issuances, total value of VND 2,000 billion).

The value of issued bonds decreased quite sharply, up to 16.2% compared to the same period last year.

It should also be noted that many issuers have extended bond maturities in the fourth quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2025 with a total value of nearly VND 28,000 billion, which helps businesses maintain capital sources and limit new issuances.

S&I Ratings estimates that issuers bought back a total of VND26,900 billion, and there were VND17,200 billion of bonds maturing in the first quarter.

Thus, the total amount of corporate bonds in circulation is currently about 1.3 million billion, a decrease of 24,000 billion VND compared to the end of 2024, equivalent to 11% of GDP.

Of which, banking and real estate are still the industries with the largest proportions with 49.4% and 33.7% of outstanding bond volume.

According to the report, the public bond issuance channel unexpectedly increased sharply, recording a record high issuance value in the first quarter of 2025, equivalent to 60% of the total public issuance value for the whole year of 2024.

In contrast, the private placement channel suddenly became quiet, causing public issuance to account for 90% of the total issuance value during this period.
