For years, Netflix has offered HDR content to Premium subscribers, primarily in two formats: HDR10 and Dolby Vision. However, HDR10 does not support scene-by-scene image data, and Dolby Vision, while capable, is not supported on many TVs, especially Samsung.
The addition of HDR10+ will help many users, especially those who own Samsung TVs, enjoy better picture quality when watching movies and shows on Netflix.
Samsung has never supported Dolby Vision on its TVs. In fact, the Korean company spearheaded the development of HDR10+, an open-source standard that competes with Dolby Vision (which requires licensing fees). Nearly every HDR-capable Samsung TV in the past 10 years has come with HDR10+.
Samsung has been the world’s best-selling TV brand for 19 consecutive years, so the fact that its TVs only support HDR10+ means that millions of Netflix users can only watch HDR content in the basic HDR10 format. Additionally, many TVs and projectors from other brands support HDR10+ but not Dolby Vision.
Netflix's addition of HDR10+ puts the service in line with major competitors like Apple TV+, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video, which have all supported the format. However, it's surprising that it's taken Netflix this long to roll out HDR10+ to users.
A lot of Netflix content now supports HDR10+, including not only the platform's originals but also many films from major studios, such as Universal's The Super Mario Bros. Movie or No Hard Feelings.
In a post on its Tech Blog, Netflix revealed that it has been working on creating HDR10+ streams for both its new releases and popular HDR movies. The company also confirmed that HDR10+ now accounts for 50% of all HDR-enabled viewing hours on the platform. Netflix’s goal is to have all HDR content on the service support HDR10+ by the end of the year.
