GCU is a division separated from TWR (airport control tower, controlling aircraft take-off and landing) of the Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport (Central Air Traffic Management Company) to professionalize the control of aircraft operations from the parking position to the waiting position before entering the runway and from when the aircraft leaves the runway and rolls back to the parking position at the airport.
In addition, the ground control position has the role of controlling and operating the activities of aircraft, people and technical equipment serving flights at the airport.
Leaders of Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation and Central Air Traffic Management Company inspected preparations for establishing ground control positions.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang, Director of the Central Air Traffic Management Company, said that since receiving the Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport (in 2020), the unit has proposed to establish the Cam Ranh GCU position according to the principle of maintaining the current flight operations methods at the TWR position, only dividing the flight operations responsibilities between TWR and GCU to ensure safety and avoid disruption.
This solution aims to meet the needs of flight operations, job specialization, improving the operational efficiency and flight operations capacity of the Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport. This is also the general trend of flight operations management in the world , for large-scale airports with complex flight operations.
The on-duty crew conducted the first flight when establishing the GCU Cam Ranh position.
Recently, the Central Air Traffic Management Company has developed an implementation plan including investment in equipment, training for air traffic controllers and technical staff, and coordination in implementing procedures for announcing aviation information. On April 18, the Cam Ranh Ground Control Unit (GCU) was officially established and put into operation.
On the same day, the Central Air Traffic Management Company transferred the right to provide aeronautical information services to the Air Traffic Information Center to the Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport. The Central Air Traffic Management Company continues to undertake the task of supporting the provision of aeronautical information services in live situations and handling unusual problems.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Cong - Deputy General Director and Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang - Party Secretary, Director of Central Air Traffic Management Company presented flowers to congratulate the Crew and Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport.
It is known that after 20 years of establishment from the predecessor Cam Ranh Air Traffic Control Station with 8 staff members, the Approach Control Center at Cam Ranh Airport now has 85 staff members including ensuring the provision of Air Traffic Services, Engineering and other tasks. In which, TWR Cam Ranh is divided into two departments TWR Cam Ranh and GCU Cam Ranh.
