On social media platform X, Tedros affirmed that the people of Congo are not alone and pledged that the WHO and the United Nations would do everything possible to support the country in overcoming the outbreak.
According to the WHO, the current outbreak is caused by the Ebola Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment. The outbreak has resulted in approximately 220 suspected deaths and around 900 confirmed cases. The virus has also spread to Uganda, with 7 suspected cases.
The WHO believes the actual scale of the outbreak may be much larger because the virus had been silently spreading in the community for a long time before being detected. Facing the risk of further spread, Uganda temporarily closed its border with Congo.
Jean Kaseya, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), said that vaccines and treatments for the Bundibugyo strain could be completed by the end of 2026.
