Notes when doing the 2025 high school graduation exam practice test, Literature subject
According to Associate Professor Dr. Do Ngoc Thong, Editor-in-Chief of the New General Education Program for Literature, candidates need to pay attention to a few points below to do well on the high school graduation exam for Literature:

Skim the entire topic
After receiving the essay topic, you need to stay calm, skim through the entire topic, both parts (reading comprehension and writing) to get an overview of the requirements of the entire topic; discover the relationship between the parts and questions in the topic.
Do the reading comprehension first.
You should only spend the first 30-40 minutes on reading comprehension. You should read the text slowly, then answer each question in the question. Just answer briefly and to the point. For example, with the question of identifying the rhetorical device in the excerpt, you only need to name the rhetorical device; there is no need to explain or analyze its effects or characteristics. On the contrary, if the question requires an explanation, you must explain... With comprehension questions (questions 3, 4) and application (question 5), you should not present at length but write very briefly, mainly stating the main information.
Allocate time appropriately for the Writing sections
It is fine to write a paragraph or an essay first. However, you need to pay attention to the relationship between the writing requirement and the reading comprehension section. If the content of a sentence is related to the reading text, do that section first. Writing a paragraph usually focuses on clarifying one main idea. The main idea is usually stated in the question. Students should state this main idea at the beginning of the paragraph; the following sentences (paragraph development) are only to clarify the idea stated at the beginning of the paragraph, not to expand on other ideas; even though the paragraph may not be long, less than 200 words, if you feel that the opening idea has been clarified, then stop. Writing a paragraph should only take about 30 minutes.
The remaining time is for writing (about 60 minutes). Because of the limited time, the essay topic cannot require students to write much. The topic usually presents material that is not too long or too difficult.
“Regarding the length, the question states the limit for writing a paragraph of 'about 200 words', meaning that you can write more or less than the specified number of words, it is not necessary to write exactly that number of words. For example, a paragraph can be 250 words or 180 words; an essay can be 700 words or 500 words... However, students should not be too engrossed in one sentence and do other sentences carelessly due to lack of time,” said Mr. Thong.
Pay attention to the exam presentation format
The new general education program requires students to pay attention not only to the content but also to the presentation. “Points may be deducted if the essay has many errors such as: sloppy handwriting (wrong, missing strokes), spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes; incorrect word usage, ambiguous, confusing, contradictory expressions...”, Mr. Thong reminded.
Express yourself honestly and creatively in your essay writing.
An essay is an expression of the writer’s thoughts, feelings, attitudes, understandings, and ways of thinking, feeling, and understanding of a literary or social issue. Therefore, students need to honestly express what they think, feel, and understand about the issue.
However, even personal thoughts need to be presented in a clear, logical order to convince the reader. The essay not only has ideas, but the writer also needs to know how to express those ideas correctly and well with clear, richly-imaged sentences and writing.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Do Ngoc Thong, students taking the graduation exam this year under the 2006 Program can also refer to the above notes to do the test effectively.
