On December 12, Belarus' BelTA news agency quoted Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and First Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Muraveiko as saying: "There is an order to ensure the deployment of Oreshnik missiles on our territory and plan their rational use."
When asked by reporters to specify the number of Oreshnik missile systems planned to be deployed in Belarus, Mr. Muraveiko replied: "Only Russian President Vladimir Putin knows."
On November 21, President Putin spoke about the US and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies announcing their decision to grant Ukraine permission to use high-precision long-range weapons to strike deep into Russian territory, after which Kiev used these weapons to attack Kursk province.
In response to the attacks, Russia test-fired its latest Oreshnik hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile with a conventional warhead against Ukraine's major Yuzhmash defense enterprise in Dnepr (formerly Dnepropetrovsk).
Regarding the power of Oreshnik, according to President Putin, the simultaneous use of many of these missiles will have the same destructive power as a nuclear attack, but will not pollute the environment, because they do not carry nuclear warheads.
The Russian leader stresses that Western provocations could have serious consequences if the Ukraine conflict escalates further.
On December 6, at a meeting of the Supreme Council of the Russian-Belarusian Union State, President Lukashenko asked Putin to deploy the Oreshnik missile system on the territory of Belarus. The Kremlin chief said that this could be done in the second half of 2025.
According to President Putin at that time, the Oreshnik missile system would be transferred to Russia's Strategic Missile Forces along with deployment on the territory of Belarus.
The Belarusian Defense Ministry later stressed that the decision to deploy the Oreshnik missile system in the country was made in response to Western moves to deploy medium-range missiles in Europe.
