The No. 1 airport by passenger traffic in 2023 is Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International, which has held the title for more than two decades, except for the pandemic-hit 2020. The airport served 104.7 million passengers last year.
Hartsfield-Jackson is expected to serve about 110 million passengers by 2024 — returning the airport to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
For the first time, Dubai took the second place, according to the preliminary rankings of the Airports Council International for 2023 just released, according to CNN.
Dubai Airport served around 87 million passengers in 2023. This is an increase of 31% year-on-year and 1% higher than in 2019. The airport connected 262 destinations in 104 countries with 102 international airlines.

The airport’s jump from fifth place in 2022 represents a major growth area in the aviation industry, with the rate of industry expansion in emerging and developing economies in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific expected to be more than double that of advanced economies over the coming decades.
Globally, passenger traffic in 2023 increased by 27% from 2022 to reach nearly 94% of 2019 results, with domestic travel recovering faster from the pandemic - increasing by 20% from 2022 to reach nearly 97% of 2019 levels.
The world's largest domestic market, the United States, adds four airports — all with significant domestic passenger traffic — to the top 10 in 2023: Dallas/Fort Worth (No. 3), Denver (No. 6), Los Angeles (No. 8) and Chicago O'Hare (No. 9).
However, in 2023, it was the international market that drove the recovery, growing by around 37% to reach around 90% of 2019 figures. And while Dubai is the No. 2 airport in terms of overall traffic, it is the world's No. 1 airport in terms of international passengers.
London Heathrow, UK, jumped from 8th place in 2022 to 4th place last year. But it was Tokyo Haneda in Japan that made the biggest jump – from 16th to 5th place, largely due to Japan’s reopening. It’s a welcome sign that Asia’s passenger numbers are getting back on track.
Istanbul Airport, Türkiye, held on to its seventh spot, while Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, fell one spot from ninth in 2022 to 10th last year. India, with its huge population and increasing air connectivity, is an example of the industry’s network development in different parts of the world./.
