Tottenham's makeshift defense, featuring four full-backs, couldn't withstand the pressure from Brighton, with the visitors trailing 4-0 at one point. However, Ange Postecoglou's side rallied in the final 20 minutes, scoring two goals and nearly pulling off an upset. But the home side ultimately outplayed the visitors to end their three-match winless streak.
Striker Joao Pedro was the best player of the match, scoring two goals from penalties, after assisting 18-year-old midfielder Jack Hinshelwood's opening goal. In the 11th minute, the Brazilian received the ball on the left wing, cut inside, and used the "la croqueta" technique to overcome pressure from three Tottenham players. In this technique, the player uses the inside of one foot to quickly flick the ball to the other, then the other foot to flick forward in a zigzag motion to get past defenders in a tight space. Pedro then passed to Hinshelwood on the right side of the penalty area, who fired a powerful shot into the top corner to open the scoring.
