Ho Chi Minh City: 79 workers and students hospitalized with suspected food poisoning

On November 27, 60 workers and 19 students in Ho Chi Minh City were hospitalized for suspected food poisoning and anaphylaxis. The incident was reported by hospitals to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety and the City Center for Disease Control also received and are handling the case.

On the evening of November 27, the Director of Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital said that the hospital had received about 60 cases of workers of Viva Vina Company Limited Branch 1 (No. 450/60 Nguyen Thi Ngau, Hamlet 1, Dong Thanh Commune), suspected of food poisoning on the same afternoon.

According to initial investigation, these people were hospitalized after having lunch with food including: fried orange fish with fish sauce, boiled white cabbage, sour soup with bean sprouts and okra. The meal was served by the industrial catering unit.

Just about 30 to more than 60 minutes after eating (cases with symptoms starting from 13:00 to 14:00), many workers began to show unusual signs. Records from the list of hospitalized patients show that most cases have symptoms such as: red skin, itchy rash on the face and neck, hot flashes, headache and dizziness. Some other cases have symptoms of vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Typical cases include male patient NVS (born in 1972) who was admitted to the hospital at 3 p.m. with vomiting and hot flushes; and female patient LTTD (born in 2006) who had red skin. The patients were taken to Hoc Mon Regional General Hospital for emergency treatment.

By 6 p.m. the same day, 24 cases were hospitalized for further treatment, and their current condition was stable. The hospital took samples from the patients to test for the cause. The remaining 36 cases were sent home for further monitoring.

According to Dr. Dang Quoc Quan, Director of Hoc Mon General Hospital, the hospital has collected vomit, gastric fluid, feces... from the patients to send for testing to find the cause.

On the same day, a representative of Thu Duc Regional General Hospital also said that they had received 19 cases of students from a Thu Duc Ward High School suspected of food poisoning. Of these, 17 cases had mild symptoms of food anaphylaxis (level 1), were initially treated by doctors and discharged home for monitoring. As for 2 cases of level 2 anaphylaxis, doctors ordered them to be hospitalized for monitoring.

Regarding food poisoning, yesterday (November 26), the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety also announced the results of the investigation into the food poisoning case related to the Co Bich Toad Bread business (112A Nguyen Thai Son, Hanh Thong Ward) that caused 316 people to be hospitalized. According to the conclusion, this was a case of food poisoning caused by the Co Bich Toad Bread business; the food was bread, the cause of the poisoning was Salmonella bacteria.
