On the morning of October 6, the Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City High-Tech Agricultural Park (AHTP) coordinated with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the School of Public Policy and Rural Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to organize a workshop on the current situation and solutions for developing high-tech agriculture in Ho Chi Minh City by 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The workshop aims to assess the current situation, potential, opportunities and challenges in the development of high-tech agriculture in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Dr. Pham Dinh Dung, Head of AHTP, Ho Chi Minh City has focused on building infrastructure and establishing pioneering units in the field of high-tech agriculture such as AHTP, Biotechnology Center, Demonstration and Experimental Farm for High-tech Dairy Farming...

In particular, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has approved the Program for developing plant varieties, livestock and high-tech agriculture in the city for the period 2020-2030. This is an orientation to focus on research and development of high-tech agriculture, making Ho Chi Minh City a model for high-tech agricultural development in the country.

In 2015, the GRDP of Ho Chi Minh City's agricultural sector reached VND 4,462 billion, achieving an average growth rate of 5.51% per year in the 2011-2015 period; in 2020 it increased to VND 5,268 billion, achieving an average growth rate of 3.38% per year in the 2016-2020 period, higher than the national agricultural GDP growth rate of 2.54% per year.

The area of agricultural land has been continuously decreasing every year. In the period 2010-2015, the city reduced 700 hectares of agricultural land each year; in the period 2015-2020, it reduced another 1,000 hectares each year. In the period 2015-2020, the value of agricultural production reached about 500 million VND/ha; by 2030, the value of agricultural land production is expected to reach from 900 million VND to 1 billion VND/ha/year.

Mr. Dinh Minh Hiep, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the city has long been shifting to high-tech agricultural production as a key and inevitable trend for large-scale production of goods with high productivity, added value, quality, efficiency, competitiveness and environmental friendliness. This is considered a suitable direction given the increasingly narrowing land fund for agriculture, bringing high income to farmers.

At the same time, the State plans, expands and upgrades the infrastructure of high-tech agricultural production zones and areas, high-tech seed production, while removing obstacles in land procedures, speeding up construction progress and soon adding and putting into use 2 or 3 high-tech agricultural zones.

In addition, the city prioritizes land leasing, land allocation and preferential policies for investment in infrastructure, science and technology, environment... for cooperatives and high-tech agricultural enterprises.

The city also encourages high-tech agricultural production households to participate and establish new high-tech agricultural cooperatives; implement preferential loan policies for high-tech agricultural production; have special mechanisms for credit and land support such as tax exemption and reduction in the initial business period.
