“Heart for Children” provides free heart disease screening for children in Hue

The program provides free screening for children under 16 years old who show signs of congenital heart disease. This is a regular activity of the “Heart for Children” program, which has been implemented for the past 15 years.

In Vietnam, tens of thousands of children with congenital heart disease are discovered each year; most of them are children from disadvantaged families. Over the past 15 years, “Heart for Children” has supported surgery costs for 6,500 patients; organized 87 free screening programs to detect congenital heart disease early for nearly 150,000 children in disadvantaged areas across the country.

At Hue Central Hospital this time, the program "Heart for Children" organized congenital heart disease screening for children not only in Thua Thien Hue province but also received and examined children from provinces and cities in the Central Highlands and other localities across the country.

On August 5, doctors at Hue Central Hospital screened nearly 600 children under 16 years old. It is expected that in two days, the hospital will screen about 1,000 children for heart disease. Cases of congenital heart disease with difficult circumstances will be considered and consulted for free heart surgery.

Dr. Ho Anh Binh, Director of the Cardiovascular Center (Hue Central Hospital), congenital heart disease is one of the most common congenital abnormalities, accounting for about 0.8-1% of all newborns. According to the natural progression, more than 50% of patients die if they do not receive surgery or intervention at the right time and with the right method.

With the strong development of modern medicine, many patients have been operated on at a young age and returned to normal life. However, there are still many children with congenital heart disease that progress silently and are not detected early at lower-level medical facilities. Therefore, screening and early detection of congenital heart disease plays an extremely important role, bringing health benefits to children and deciding their future.
