Concerns about accommodation services

One of the advantages of Ho Chi Minh City's tourism industry compared to other provinces and cities is its extensive system of tourist accommodation facilities. This includes many 4-5 star hotels that cater to the needs of the mid-to-high-end segment and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourists.

Although domestic and international tourism has resumed, the hotel system is facing many difficulties. The hotels that meet the minimum requirements for serving tourists, and those with 1-3 stars in the city, are facing the most challenges.

As of the end of 2022, the city had 3,227 tourist accommodation establishments of all types, corresponding to more than 65,000 rooms meeting business requirements. Of these, 325 hotels were rated from 1 to 5 stars, corresponding to 17,613 standard rooms; and 2,902 hotels met the minimum criteria for facilities and technical services, corresponding to more than 48,000 standard rooms.

However, the hotel market is showing significant differentiation. 4-5 star hotels achieved an average occupancy rate of 75% or higher, maintaining stable business performance and revenue throughout 2022. This customer base mainly consists of foreign professionals working in the city, international tourist groups – loyal customers of the hotel system – and a large number of international MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) delegations organizing incentive conferences combined with sightseeing and tourism.

Meanwhile, the hotel system, which previously had no star rating or 1-3 star ratings, is still struggling to recover from the limited influx of international tourists, and market purchasing power has not shown signs of growth compared to the same period in 2019. More importantly, there is a shortage of experienced personnel, as a large portion of high-quality human resources have shifted to other professions. There is fierce competition between traditional businesses and online booking platforms (Booking, Agoda, Traveloka...). Traditional businesses are often limited in terms of technology, customer experience, and marketing capabilities, thus severely impacting sales and the attractiveness of small and medium-sized establishments.

This year, Ho Chi Minh City's tourism sector aims to welcome approximately 35 million domestic tourists and 5 million international tourists, generating revenue of around 160,000 billion VND. In the long term, for tourism to become a key economic sector, improving service quality, developing more tourism products, increasing length of stay, and stimulating tourist spending, finding specific solutions for the effective development of the city's hotel industry is extremely urgent. Because when service quality is good, tourists not only stay longer and spend more, but are also more likely to return.

When the city's tourism accommodation industry develops to its full potential, it will contribute to enhancing the city's status and further developing the tourism sector, contributing an increasingly higher proportion to Ho Chi Minh City's GRDP.
