At the beginning of the year, we visited Ms. Cuc's house, the owner of a farm raising rat snakes - a large, long wild animal in Quang Tri commune, Da Huoai district, Lam Dong province. There, about 20,000 rat snakes of various types are being raised. Ms. Chuc sells rat snakes for commercial purposes at a price of 400,000-500,000 VND/kg, bringing in hundreds of millions of VND in income each year.

Dan Viet reporters had the opportunity to visit the commercial snake farm of Ms. To Thi Cuc and Mr. Nguyen Van Thu in Da Huoai district, Lam Dong province.

The snake farm of Mr. Thu and Ms. Cuc is a livestock and economic development model that brings high value to the locality. Moreover, the snake consumption market is currently stable, giving breeders the opportunity to expand and develop further.

Recalling how he started his business with snakes, Mr. Thu said that since 2016, he has specialized in growing orchids for sale. Then, when the sea-born orchids such as Phu Tho 5-petal white and Hien Oanh 5-petal white became very popular, he discussed with his wife to invest and made a decent amount of money.

"I determined that everything has its "limit". Having earned a little capital from orchids, my wife and I invested in a commercial snake farming model.

In April 2021, after being guided by a brother on my mother's side in the North, I invested in building 100 wooden snake cages to raise buffalo snakes.

"At first, I bought 1,000 snake eggs for 25 million VND to incubate. After about 3 months, the snake eggs hatched, then I put the snakes in a wooden cage I had made earlier to take care of them," Mr. Thu recalled.

Anh Thu is very happy because his model has developed stably, helping his family develop economically.

Standing next to her husband, Ms. To Thi Cuc said that in the beginning of raising snakes, due to lack of experience and techniques, the snakes often suffered from intestinal diseases and pneumonia. Therefore, the number of snakes in the farm gradually decreased, causing a lot of damage.

Holding the snake in her hand, Ms. Cuc shared: "At first, my husband and I had to catch live frogs every night to feed the snake. However, this did not last long because the frogs and toads we caught would run out after a while.

Then, thanks to the advice of a snake-raising brother in the North, my wife and I went to incubators to buy discarded chickens and ducks to feed the snakes.

This food is for snakes and can also be frozen for later use. As technology improves, the number of snakes on my husband and I's farm increases, and our income becomes more stable."

Currently, after about 4 years of "getting involved" in snake farming, Mr. Thu and Ms. Cuc have built a farm of about 10,000 breeding snakes and 10,000 commercial snakes.

Commercial snakes are sold by Ms. Cuc’s family to restaurants and pubs, so the output is quite stable. Meanwhile, the family also exports the snake to the Chinese market, bringing a stable income for the family.

Currently, commercial rat snakes are sold by Ms. Cuc's family, a millionaire farmer in Quang Tri, Da Huoai district, Lam Dong province, for 400,000-500,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Cuc sells snake breeds for 150,000-200,000 VND/snake depending on size.

It is known that Ms. Cuc sells commercial snakes for 400,000-500,000 VND/kg, and breeding snakes for 150,000-200,000 VND/head depending on size. With the above selling price, Ms. Cuc and Mr. Thu earn hundreds of millions of VND per year.

"After several years of raising snakes, we realized that raising snakes is quite simple. The most important thing is to keep their cages dry, cool, and avoid humidity so that the snakes do not get respiratory and intestinal diseases.

In the near future, we plan to continue expanding the farm, increasing the herd of snakes to 25,000-30,000. My husband and I are also willing to share our experiences with those who want to raise snakes locally, and at the same time provide breeds, food and purchase products for people," said Ms. Cuc.

Talking about the snake farming model of Mr. Thuc's family, Ms. Cuc, leader of the Farmers' Association of Da Huoai district (Lam Dong province) said that this is a model that brings high economic value and development prospects in this locality.

The Farmers’ Association has also chosen Mr. Thuc’s snake breeding model as a pilot model to open training courses and study tours for local people. At the same time, the local government also provides technical support and connects product consumption markets to help people implement the model more effectively.
