Son La warns of flash floods and landslides

Due to the influence of storm No. 5, from the night of August 25 to August 26, Son La province experienced heavy to very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 80mm to 150mm, and in some places over 200mm. Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in many communes.

According to a quick report from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control of Son La province, heavy rains have caused 30 households to have their roofs blown off, one household's roof completely blown off; 10 households had to be urgently evacuated due to landslides and the risk of subsidence.

Regarding agriculture , more than 60 hectares of rice, corn and crops were flooded, washed away or damaged; some areas have not been counted because the water has not receded.

The floods also caused at least four schools to be flooded and damaged; some fences and auxiliary structures collapsed. Many national and provincial highways were eroded and blocked, including national highway 6 and provincial roads 109 and 114; thousands of cubic meters of earth and rock slid onto the road. At least four electric poles were broken or tilted and several small ponds and dams were broken.

On the afternoon of August 26, the Son La Province Hydrometeorological Station issued a warning. Radar images showed that convective clouds were causing showers and thunderstorms, with localized heavy rain in many communes and wards in the province.

In the next few hours, the cloud area will continue to develop, potentially causing heavy rain with thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind in the communes of Bac Yen, Phu Yen, Van Ho, Moc Chau, Yen Chau and many other localities.

The meteorological agency warns of the risk of natural disasters due to tornadoes, lightning, and hail at level 1. Localized heavy rains can cause flash floods and landslides in steep hills, along rivers and streams, and in construction sites, and flooding in low-lying areas.

During thunderstorms, there is a risk of trees falling, damaging houses and traffic works, reducing visibility when participating in traffic, even causing accidents and threatening people's lives.
