Breast milk banks help increase survival rates of premature babies

Reporting at the conference, Dr. Hai said that in recent years, the rate of premature births in countries around the world has increased. Specifically, in 2014, premature births globally accounted for about 10.6% of all live births, an estimated 9.8% in 2000. In particular, multiple pregnancies are a factor that causes the uterus to overstretch and is also a high risk factor for premature birth.

The rate of premature birth in twins is over 50%, 10.8 times higher than in singleton pregnancies. Premature birth not only causes many complications for newborns but also places an economic burden on the care of a premature baby. About 70% of premature babies die in the neonatal period and 50% die within the first 5 years of life.

According to Dr. Hai, premature babies face serious illnesses such as respiratory distress syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, hypoxic encephalopathy, vision and hearing problems.

At Tu Du Hospital, the neonatal mortality rate at the hospital is getting lower and lower, decreasing gradually over the years. Specifically, after 5 years, neonatal deaths gradually decreased from 466 cases (in 2018) to 252 cases (in 2022). In the first 6 months of 2023, Tu Du Hospital had 28,700 babies born, of which 160 were neonatal deaths.

Tu Du Hospital is a large neonatal resuscitation center, fully equipped with modern, specialized equipment. The survival rate of premature babies at the hospital has increased significantly over the years. Specifically: in the group of babies born under 26 weeks old, in 2018, only 25% of babies were kept alive, increasing to 47% in 2023.

This rate increases to 75% for premature babies born at 26-28 weeks and 98% for babies born at 32 weeks. "We are continuing to further improve the survival rate in the 26-28 week group by methods such as strengthening neonatal intensive care centers, as well as developing human milk banks, focusing on feeding premature babies," Dr. Hai shared.

Not only does the rate of premature infant mortality decrease, but the rate of maternal mortality in hospitals also decreases. At Tu Du Hospital, in 2022, there were 7 emergency cases of uterine rupture and 241 cases of placenta accreta. This is the main cause of maternal death. All cases of uterine rupture outside the hospital were promptly treated by Tu Du Hospital. The rate of uterine preservation surgery in placenta accreta is more than 90% of cases, with new surgical techniques, helping to reduce blood loss during placenta accreta surgery.

The Vietnam - France - Asia - Pacific Obstetrics and Gynecology Conference (VFAP) was organized by Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, with the participation of more than 73 reporters who are experts from the VFAP Association, the Asia - Pacific Maternal and Fetal Medicine Association, the International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology...

The conference was attended by more than 2,700 delegates (400 international delegates and 2,300 Vietnamese delegates) with 100 reports on "hot spots" in women's reproductive health care. Typical examples include new advances in prenatal ultrasound to detect fetal abnormalities as early as 11-14 weeks; new updates on non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPT); new advances in fetal intervention; optimizing health management for postmenopausal women; achievements in severe obstetric emergencies...

This is a condition for medical staff in the field of obstetrics and gynecology to have the opportunity to update new knowledge according to the development of modern medicine. In order to provide the most comprehensive obstetric and gynecological health care for women, improving the quality of life on par with the world.
