According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, on June 1, the Cameroonian Ministry of Health said that 26 more people have died in the cholera outbreak that has been raging in the country for the past two weeks, bringing the total number of victims to 426. In addition, there are about 1,868 confirmed cases of the disease.

Cameroon's Ministry of Health said in a statement that "more than 79% of cases presented to health facilities in moderate or severe condition".

Faced with this situation, Cameroonian authorities have called on people to avoid eating and contact with food, water sources and surfaces that are or are suspected of being contaminated with cholera bacteria, and to wash their hands thoroughly with soap before preparing food or after using the bathroom or toilet.

Cholera is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, transmitted through the digestive tract through contaminated food and water. This disease can cause death within hours if not treated.

A report released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on June 1 shows that since the beginning of this year, 14 African countries have recorded cases of cholera. This situation is worrying, because the death rate in many countries is now higher than in previous outbreaks.

The United Nations (UN) said that cholera has been on the rise since 2021 after a decade of decline. This week, the UN also warned that about 1 billion people in 43 countries around the world are at risk of the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) said the cause of the cholera outbreak is increasing poverty, conflict and climate change around the world.
