Shrimp farming in hot season: People need to follow recommendations

Currently, the weather has many unfavorable developments for brackish water shrimp farming and lobster cage farming, especially prolonged heat combined with thunderstorms. Therefore, people need to strengthen shrimp farming management, comply with recommendations to minimize risks to aquaculture.

Adverse weather conditions

Recently, many brackish water shrimp farmers in Ninh Phu commune (Ninh Hoa town) are extremely worried about their shrimp in ponds, because the hot weather and continuous heavy rain have affected the shrimp. Mr. Le Khanh - a shrimp farmer in this locality said: “My family has 4 ponds for raising white-leg shrimp, each pond is 3,000 - 3,500m2 , the weather was favorable in the first crop of the year, I released 100,000 shrimp/pond. Recently, I released the second batch, it was too hot so I had to reduce the amount of shrimp by 50%. Although I have raised them sparsely, I am very worried because the newly released shrimp have weak resistance while in recent days, the hot weather combined with thunderstorms makes the shrimp very susceptible to heat shock. I had to cover the ponds with nets and run additional water fans to minimize the impact of the weather on the shrimp in the ponds. Shrimp farmers here are all worried about the unfavorable weather so they do not dare to risk releasing shrimp. Therefore, there are still many empty ponds.”

According to information from the Department of Fisheries, Seas and Islands, the results of recent environmental monitoring of aquaculture areas in the province show that the temperature of brackish water shrimp farming areas and lobster farming areas is 3 degrees Celsius higher than in March this year. It is forecasted that from June to August, farming areas in the province will continue to experience heat waves with intensity equivalent to the average of many years. Although not exceeding the extreme threshold, the prolonged heat waves, combined with thunderstorms, cause fluctuations in the water environment, affecting the health of farmed shrimp, increasing the risk of disease. This not only affects brackish water tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp, but also affects cage-raised lobsters.

Mr. Le Dinh Khiem - Head of the Department of Fisheries, Seas and Islands said: "To limit risks and ensure the aquaculture production plan for 2025, the department has issued an official dispatch requesting localities in the province to urgently inform and guide farmers to apply measures to strengthen management of farming objects during the hot season and the changing seasons. Localities need to pay attention to strengthening inspection of the aquaculture situation in the area; information on weather forecasts, warnings, and forecasts of natural disasters; notification of monitoring results, warnings of the aquatic environment so that farmers can proactively prevent and minimize damage...

Control of farming environment, food and disease prevention

For cage-raised lobsters, people need to thin out the density of lobsters in the cages according to the farming cycle; the cages must have a minimum water depth at low tide of 4m for fixed cages, 6m for submerged cages and 8m for floating cages; ensure the distance between the cages and the water surface is more than 1.5m. Farmers need to pay attention to reducing the intensity of light shining directly on the cages by covering the cage surface with a net; when the weather is hot, windy or when there is a thunderstorm, it is necessary to provide more dissolved oxygen to prevent the case of locally low dissolved oxygen in the water, affecting the health of the farmed shrimp. Farmers need to actively monitor the environment around the cages and the water color, when there is an abnormality, they need to immediately move the cages to a safe place. During the farming process, they need to regularly dive to observe the farmed shrimp, when the shrimp show abnormal signs such as: clinging to the net on the surface, showing signs of disease, they need to be separated for treatment, collect and destroy seriously ill shrimp. Farmers also need to pay special attention to collecting leftover food and peeled shrimp shells to bring them to the mainland for processing; regularly clean the cages to increase water circulation. For shrimp feed, it is necessary to choose quality, disinfected feed; control the amount of feed put into the cage, when the weather is hot, reduce the amount of feed by 20-30%; periodically supplement digestive enzymes, minerals, vitamin C to increase the resistance of farmed shrimp. People also need to proactively monitor and prevent diseases for lobsters against some diseases that develop strongly in the hot season such as: Milk disease, red body, shrimp infected with fungus...

For raising black tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp in brackish water ponds, farmers need to regularly monitor the pond water temperature and algae color. When it is hot, algae will grow excessively, so it is necessary to take measures to cut algae such as: Diluting water, using lime at night... When the weather is hot, farmers need to increase the time of water fanning, especially from 10pm to 5am the next day to increase oxygen content, especially at the bottom of the pond; reduce 20-30% of feed when it is hot, stop feeding when the sun is harsh, and only feed in the early morning or cool afternoon. In addition, it is necessary to add vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, and herbs to the feed; observe any unusual signs of shrimp; Stocking at a density suitable to actual conditions and farming processes to facilitate care and management... During the farming process, farmers need to proactively monitor and prevent shrimp diseases for some diseases that develop strongly in the hot season such as: Hepatopancreatic necrosis, white feces...
