Paying tribute to the great contributions of King Dinh Tien Hoang

On the evening of April 17, at the special national relic of Hoa Lu Ancient Capital (Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh ), Ninh Binh province held a ceremony to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of King Dinh Tien Hoang's birth and the opening of the Hoa Lu festival in 2024.

In the art program at the ceremony, artists performed an epic about the hero Dinh Bo Linh from 1,100 years ago, from his birth, childhood, to the years of raising the flag of uprising, suppressing the 12 warlords, unifying the country, and establishing the Dai Co Viet state.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Pham Quang Ngoc, Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People's Committee, said that the 1,100th anniversary of King Dinh Tien Hoang's birth and the opening of Hoa Lu festival in 2024 is an opportunity toeducate the nation about patriotic traditions, good cultural values, the will of independence, self-reliance, unity and the desire for peace; expressing respect and deep gratitude for the great contributions of King Dinh Tien Hoang and his predecessors.

At the same time, deepen the historical stature, special value, and great role of the Dinh Dynasty, the Early Le Dynasty, the Dai Co Viet State, and the ancient capital Hoa Lu in the historical process of the nation; and at the same time honor the lasting values ​​of the intangible cultural heritage of Hoa Lu festival.

"The life and career of King Dinh Tien Hoang are closely linked to the process of unifying the country, forming the first centralized feudal state in the history of the nation, strongly affirming the will to revive the nation, based on the spirit of independence, autonomy, self-reliance, and self-strengthening.

Mr. Doan Minh Huan, Secretary of Ninh Binh Provincial Party Committee, beat the drum to open the festival.

To show gratitude to the king's merits, the people and the state institutions of each period built a temple in the ancient palace area, annually held the Hoa Lu festival, and to this day it is still a unique and distinctive cultural and spiritual activity of the people of the ancient capital," said Mr. Ngoc.

Mr. Ngoc also affirmed that the Party Committee, government and people of Ninh Binh province always respect, preserve and promote the good values ​​of Hoa Lu festival as preserving the sacred soul of the ancient capital.

King Dinh Tien Hoang - Dinh Bo Linh was born on February 15, the year of Giap Than (924), in Dai Hoang village, now Van Ha hamlet (Gia Phuong commune, Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh).

Historical records show that after King Ngo Quyen died, our country fell into disunity. A number of mandarins and generals rose up to form separate factions (historical records called it the 12 warlords rebellion). At that time, Dinh Bo Linh had the will to quell the rebellion, unify the country, and establish a court. Knowing that his forces were still small, Dinh Bo Linh allied with warlord Tran Lam (also known as Tran Minh Cong in Bo Hai Khau - Thai Binh today).

When he was old and weak, Tran Lam handed over all military power to Dinh Bo Linh. Seeing that Bo Hai Khau was not a favorable base for building a great army, Dinh Bo Linh brought all his generals and soldiers to build a base in Hoa Lu cave (Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh today).

Here, relying on the shape of the river and the rugged mountains, Dinh Bo Linh strengthened the construction of citadels and ramparts, recruited heroes and soldiers, and built a powerful force to dominate one region.

Seeing that Dinh Bo Linh's forces were growing stronger, Ngo Xuong Van and Ngo Xuong Ngap brought troops to Hoa Lu (Thung Lau cave in Gia Hung commune today) to destroy them but were defeated and had to withdraw.

After that, Dinh Bo Linh sometimes recruited and sometimes attacked to pacify other warlords. In just one year, he had pacified the warlords and was called Van Thang Vuong.

In the year of Mau Thin 968, Van Thang Vuong ascended the throne as Emperor Dai Thang Minh Hoang De, named the country Dai Co Viet, established the capital in Hoa Lu, and at the same time built a palace and established a court. In 970, he named the reign Thai Binh and minted Thai Binh coins.

Dinh Tien Hoang is a national hero who initiated and laid the foundation for national unification, initially building a centralized feudal state. King Dinh reigned for 12 years (968 - 979), and lived to be 56 years old. His temple was built at the foot of Ma Yen mountain, right on the old palace grounds.
