Artificial Intelligence: OpenAI Plans to Raise More Than $1 Trillion

Financial Times (FT) reported on October 15 that OpenAI is building a 5-year plan to fulfill its commitment to spend more than 1,000 billion USD to promote the development of artificial intelligence (AI).

Accordingly, OpenAI is looking for new revenue streams, debt partnerships and additional fundraising.

To reach this massive financial goal, OpenAI is pursuing a number of initiatives: negotiating deals to provide customized products to governments and businesses; considering new plans to take on additional debt and build out the company’s AI infrastructure; considering offering computing power from its Stargate project with SoftBank Group Corp.; evaluating ways to enter the online advertising space and launch consumer hardware products, notably through a partnership with former Apple designer Jony Ive.

All of these efforts are aimed at meeting debt obligations at a time when OpenAI is still largely a loss-making business.

The company's committed capital is now much higher than its earnings, a trend that has made some investors, including Microsoft Corporation, nervous.

AI development is a huge energy hog. OpenAI has pledged to acquire 26 gigawatts of power from companies including Oracle Corporation, NVIDIA Corporation, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Broadcom Inc, according to the FT. This commitment could cost more than $1 trillion over the next decade.

Recent reports show that OpenAI generated about $4.3 billion in revenue in the first half of 2025, but also recorded a loss of $13.5 billion./.
