Federal networks are at risk of being targeted by unidentified “nation-state hackers” who are deliberately exploiting vulnerabilities in products made by cybersecurity company F5, US government officials said on October 15.
In a statement and accompanying emergency directive, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said hackers had penetrated F5's systems and extracted files, including part of the source code and information about security vulnerabilities, and could use this information as a roadmap to break into F5's equipment and software, thereby fully penetrating the target networks.
CISA warns that hackers could attack federal networks through F5 products. CISA recommends that government officials identify F5 devices on their networks and apply urgent updates.
CISA also encourages other users of F5 devices to do the same, stating that the vulnerability affects all organizations and industries that use F5 products.
CISA did not reveal the identity of the hackers and said there was no indication so far that any US civilian agencies were attacked.
Previously, F5 said it had detected hackers illegally accessing some of the company's systems on August 9 and taken strong measures to prevent this threat.
However, this illegal intrusion did not affect F5's operations. The company said it would continue to strengthen security controls and infrastructure after the incident./.
