In celebration of Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23), on the afternoon of November 3, the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam organized the opening ceremony of the Thang Long-Hanoi Calligraphy Exhibition with the theme "Fragrance and Colors of Thang Long."

In his opening speech, Director of the Center for Cultural and Scientific Activities of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam Le Xuan Kieu said that the Thang Long-Hanoi Calligraphy Exhibition is an annual activity at the special national relic of the Temple of Literature - Quoc Tu Giam and each year has a new theme.

"We hope that the exhibition will be a gathering place for calligraphers from all over the country and also a meeting place for those who love the art of calligraphy, contributing to the vitality of calligraphy activities in today's life, serving the community," said Mr. Le Xuan Kieu.

In order to honor the beauty of the land and people of Thang Long-Hanoi with the unique cultural values of the thousand-year-old capital under the expression of calligraphy art, with the theme "Fragrance and beauty of Thang Long", the content of the works displayed at the Thang Long-Hanoi Calligraphy Exhibition 2024 are immortal poems and literature about Thang Long-Hanoi and the quintessence of ancient philosophy by famous authors in history such as: Le Thanh Tong, Chu Van An, Nguyen Trai, Truong Han Sieu, Nguyen Du, Ngo Thi Nham, Tran Ba Lam, Ba Huyen Thanh Quan...

From hundreds of entries, the exhibition selected 36 outstanding works by 18 authors from the North, Central and South of the country, including 2 young female authors.

The works are mainly written in the traditional style with Seal, Le, Chan, Hanh, and Cao scripts. Besides, there are also some works with new and innovative ways of expressing the strokes and layout.

In addition to displaying the works, the exhibition dedicates a space to installation art with 365 ancient notebooks with excerpts from “Khuyến học văn” (Encouraging Learning Essay) by King Le Thanh Tong, a great author of Vietnamese medieval literature, as a reminder that learning must be practiced daily according to the teachings of our ancestors.

According to Curator Xuan Nhu Vu Thanh Tung, displayed at this year's exhibition will continue to be mainly works written in a traditional, scholastic style with mastery in technique, smoothness in penmanship, liveliness in style and harmony in style.

The works displayed in this exhibition have partly shown the maturity of each author as they have gradually shaped their writing style and style.

Interspersed with some paintings with new and unique expressions in writing and presentation of works, showing that the hobby of pen and ink is very rich and still has much room for development in the current context when traditional calligraphy is always neat, moderate, meaningful and serious.

Once again affirming that the criteria of classical calligraphy will always be the backbone, the bloodline, the basic foundation of traditional calligraphy for those who want to pursue this art form.

Innovations or new directions will lead to new discoveries in the art of pen and ink. That is also the consistent orientation, like a red thread for those who want to study, research and follow the path of pen and ink./.
