According to KCNA, the operation was part of a plan to modernize artillery and missile forces to achieve North Korea's five-year defense development goals. The test focused on evaluating the warhead power of tactical ballistic missiles, the reliability of extended-range 240mm guided rocket artillery systems, and the accuracy of tactical cruise missiles using artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
KCNA quoted leader Kim Jong Un as expressing great satisfaction with the test results, noting that it was a clear signal that North Korea's military capabilities and combat readiness were being enhanced. Kim also particularly praised the new tactical cruise missile, a weapon expected to be deployed to long-range artillery units near the inter-Korean border.
According to KCNA, the missile system integrates multiple guidance methods, including terrain mapping technology and AI-powered targeting, allowing it to strike targets within a 100km range with high accuracy. The North Korean leader also reaffirmed the goal of simultaneously developing both nuclear capabilities and conventional military forces, emphasizing that the country's determination to protect its sovereignty and self-defense will be demonstrated through clearer actions.
In relation to these developments, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command reaffirmed its commitment to defending allies in the region following North Korea's missile launch on the same day. In a statement released that day, the command said the U.S. was aware of the launches and was coordinating closely with allies and partners in the region. The statement clarified that, based on current assessments, the event did not pose a direct threat to U.S. personnel, territory, or allies. The U.S. remains committed to defending its national territory and allies in the region.
North Korea's latest missile launches come amid speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping may soon visit Pyongyang, following recent private meetings with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.
